The chapter provides an overview of Kendon’s research biography, describing the origins of the theoretical notions and categories for analysis that he developed, e.g. gesture unit, gesture phrase, preparation, stroke, hold, kinesic action, the ways in which gestures can perform referential (through forms of pointing and depiction) and pragmatic functions (including operational, performative, modal, and parsing functions). The data he considered included not only speakers’ gestures, but also signed languages of different types, e.g. those used by the Deaf (primary sign languages), to those used for ritualistic or professional reasons (alternate sign languages). Discussion of the latter notes their structural relation to the spoken languages of their users. Locations and communities in which Kendon studied visible action as utterance include Great Britian, Naples, Italy; Papua New Guinea, and the United States; and among Aboriginal people in Australia. The work finishes with issues related to the study of language origins. Emphasis is placed throughout on the limitations of the term ‘gesture’ and the author’s preference for other terms, such as ‘utterance dedicated visible action’.

The chapters in the handbook cover five main topics. Gesture types in terms of forms and functions; the focus is on manual gestures and their use as emblems, recurrent gestures, pointing gestures, and iconic representational gestures, but attention is also given to facial gestures. Different methods by which gestures have been annotated and analyzed, and different theoretical and methodological approaches, including semiotic analysis. The relation of gesture to language use covers language evolution as well as first and second language acquisition. Gestures in relation to cognition, including an overview of McNeill’s growth point theory. Gestures in interaction, considering variation in gesture use and intersubjectivity. Across the chapters, the meaning of the term ‘gesture’ is itself debated, as is the relation of gesture to language (as multimodal communication or in terms of different semiotic systems). Gesture use is studied based on data from speakers of various languages and cultures, but there is a bias toward European cultures, which remains to be addressed. The handbook provides overviews of the work of some scholars which was previously not widely available in English.

Medicine teems with anecdotes, brief, pointed accounts of healthcare episodes, informed by observations and narrative arguments. Initially denoting hitherto undivulged, but notable, historical events, anecdotes narrated by doctors were not easily distinguishable from clinical cases. Those recounted by patients and carers in the modern era are the subject of this chapter, which investigates how they grasp, size up, and characterize human vulnerabilities, resulting from illness and inequalities in healthcare knowledge and power. An unregulated and anti-authoritarian idiom that does not seek to isolate events and experiences from subjective thoughts and feelings about them, these sorts of anecdotes can critically evaluate medical services and glimpse the truth about healthcare situations. Contemporary medicine, however, views anecdotal observations and viewpoints as biased and untrustworthy. Despite the current climate of scepticism concerning anecdotal information, anecdotes remain prolific oral and literary interventions, that provide vital insights into the interpersonal and social relations of healthcare.

Language is paradigmatically a human activity, largely consisting of speakers saying things in order to inform, warn, misinform, threat, sell, and so on. Language is important because it is a system for doing things. This suggests that the philosophy of action should be a part – a very important part – of the philosophy of language. To a certain extent it is. And, in consequence, the focus has moved from sentences to utterances. It has moved, but not entirely. Not because philosophers and logicians are unaware of utterances, but because the working assumption is that semantics should focus on what all utterances of an expression or sentence have in common, due to meaning, and not on how they differ, due to the particular facts of the utterance. In this chapter we first consider how this assumption has been challenged and express some reservations about alternatives. Then we turn to our own theory, the reflexive-referential theory, which takes utterances as basic to the semantics and pragmatics of natural language.

This chapter describes the process of creating and annotating a corpus. This process involves, for instance, collecting data (speech and writing), transcribing recorded speech, and adding annotation, markup indicating in a conversation, for instance, when one person’s speech overlaps another speaker. While written texts are relatively easy to collect – most writing is readily available in digital formats – speech, especially spontaneous conversations, has to be transcribed, though voice recognition software has made progress in automating the transcription of certain kinds of speech, such as monologues. Other stages of building a corpus are also discussed, ranging from the administrative (keeping records of texts collected) to transcribing recordings of speech. The chapter concludes with a description of various kinds of textual markup and linguistic annotation that can be added to texts. Topics discussed include how to create a “header” for a particular text. Headers contain various kinds of information. For written texts, the header would include, for instance, the title of the text; the author(s); if published, where it was published. Other textual markup is internal to the text, and in a spoken text would include such information as speaker IDs, and the beginnings and ends of overlapping speech.

Speech is normally used for verbal interaction between at least two persons, called interlocutors. Researchers have measured rate of information transfer by speech across languages and have found a relatively constant value across languages. Spoken language is very different from written language in a number of important ways. Speech is perceived by hearers based primarily on the acoustic information contained in the speech signal, but modified by a number of factors, including top--down processing. Perception is made more complex by factors such as the necessity of segmenting and variance in the signal caused by individual differences and conditions of the speech environment. Speaker normalization is required by the hearer. The ear and hearing mechanism play an important role in speech perception. Rapid pressure variation of sound is converted to fluctuations in the viscous fluids of the inner ear or cochlea. This conversion occurs through the middle ear in which the principle of the lever, and the principle of collecting energy over a large area and concentrating it, play roles.

The use of prosodic categories gives a clearer understanding of the intonation of utterancesthan the syntactic structure that was assumed in SPE. The prosodic hierarchy includes eight categories from the highest (the phonological utterance)through the intermediate cateories (intonation phrase, phonological phrase, clitic group, phonological word, foot, syllable) to the lowest (the mora). Each unit consists exclusively of units of the next lower category, though certain derived structures are possible with nesting, as when a syllable is adjoined to a foot. In that case the original foot is a constituent of the derived larger foot and a sister to the adjoined syllable.
