In the past 50 years, South America has emerged as the dominant world producer of soybeans, a crop of no significance in the region before the middle of the 20th century. As of the crop year 2019/2020, Brazil and Argentina produced 176 million tons which is over half of all world production and these two countries alone will also account for 57 per cent of all Soybeans exported in international trade. How this new agricultural product evolved in these two principal regional producers is the aim of this study. Here we attempt to examine the historical evolution of soybean production in Brazil and Argentina and try to show the unique patterns of production in each of the two crucial states.

Studies were carried out on the neonatal development of Riptortus dentipes (Fabricius) and Nezara viridula (Linnaeus) on pods of cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp (var. VITA-3) and soybean Glycine max (L.) Merrill (TG× 536–02D). Both crops sustained nymphal development and adult reproduction of R. dentipes. Nymphal duration was 20.7 days on cowpea and 21.3 days on soybean; mean adult weight was 56.3 mg (male) and 58.3 mg (female) on cowpea and 55.8 mg (male) and 57.6 mg (female) on soybean. Adults preferred soybean to cowpea for egg laying though a substantially higher number of eggs was laid on the mesh walls of the cages indicating the somewhat suboptimal nature of both plant substrates. The nymphal period for TV. viridula was 24.4 days on cowpea and 25.4 days on soybean, and the mean adult weight for males was 139.0 mg while that for females 186.0 mg on cowpea. On soybean, the mean adult weight was 127.3 mg for males and 176.9 mg for females. Soybean leaves were preferred for oviposition. The concept of host plant suitability to the various stages of these insects with respect to host switches between cowpea and soybean.

Experiments on artificial infestation of soybean with pod-sucking bugs showed that Riptortus dentipes caused more damage to the plant than did Nezara viridula. The density of four insects per plant used was high enough to significantly damage the plant. The reproductive developmental stages of the plant defined as R3, R4 and R5 were sensitive to the pod-sucking bugs studied. Plots infested with R. dentipes adults suffered 72% pod damage compared to 44% pod damage in plots infested with N. viridula. Riptortus dentipes significantly affected the physiology of the plant and reduced grain yield and grain quality. The results also showed that there is potential for biocontrol of pod-sucking bugs.

Leaf extractables/fractions obtained from the leaves of soybean PI 227687 showed greater antifeedant activity towards the third-instar larvae of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hub.). Extraction of leaves with ethyl acetate followed by 60% methanol, and counter-current partitioning of leaf extractables between ethyl acetate, water and hexane was not convenient for isolation of antifeedants. Methanol (60%) in water extracted most of the antifeedants from leaves, and this extract when partitioned between ethyl acetate and water (the latter repeatedly extracted with the former), concentrated the antifeedants from soybean leaves for further processing on thin layer chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography.

There were quantitative differences in ethyl acetate fraction of PI 227687 (6%) and Davis (3.2%), and in flavonoids resolved at Rf 0.10–0.20 in benzene: ethyl acetate: methanol (4:3:3). Most of the flavonoids with antifeedant activity resolved at Rf 0.10–0.80. The antifeedant activity of flavonoid bands from PI 227687 was greater than the corresponding bands of Davis.

Carob seed germ meal (CSGM), and soybean meal (SBM), were tested as ingredients of diets for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings at three levels of inclusion, contributing 20 to 50% of the total protein of the diet. Fish growth decreased as the level of the plant by-product in the diet increased. Diets containing CSGM resulted in lower growth than comparable SBM diets, especially at inclusion levels contributing 37 and 53% of the total protein. High dietary CSGM levels decreased body protein and increased liver protein indicating possible amino acid deficiencies and/or imbalances at high inclusion levels. Mortality was also high at the high dietary CSGM level. The results are discussed with référence to the antinutritional factors contained in the raw materials tested and their possible effects on protein availability.

Afin d'améliorer la formulation des aliments composés destinés à la croissance de Penaeus rannamei, nous avons étudié l'effet de l'incorporation de farine de soja et de farine de poisson sur la croissance, la survie, les caractéristiques de l'hépatopancréas et les enzymes de cette espèce. Quatre concentrations de farine de soja (5, 10, 20, 40 %), quatre concentrations de farine de poisson (0, 5, 15, 30 %) deux formes de farine de soja et trois farines de poissons différentes suivant leur origine géographique ont été successivement testées. La nourriture (10 % du poids initial) a été distribuée deux fois par jour (8-9 h et 19 h). Les rapports hépatosomatiques, les protéines, les protéases, les amylases et la trypsine ont été déterminés sur neuf individus par traitement. Les résultats montrent qu'une forte incorporation de farine de soja ou de farine de poisson a pour effet de diminuer la croissance des animaux. Cette diminution est liée à une baisse de l'ingestibilité des aliments. Les enzymes digestives ne sont pas affectées. Les résultats montrent par ailleurs que l'origine géographique d'une source de poisson et le traitement subi par la farine de soja et la farine de poisson d'autre part, n'affectent pas les performances zootechniques et les enzymes digestives. L'ensemble des résultats permet de conclure que l'incorporation de soja ou de farine de poisson dans l'aliment doit être réalisée à faible taux, et ce, uniquement dans le but de diversifier les sources de protéines.

The soybean plant introduction (PI)227687 is highly resistant to 16 different insect pests of soybean in Australia, Brazil, Taiwan and the United States. In most of the pest Lepidoptera, resistance is expressed as greatly increased mortality in the later larval instars. The soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) is most severely affected in the final larval instar. Antibiotic effects include reduced weight gain, growth rate and increased mortality. These effects are enhanced by mechanically wounding foliage 24 hr prior to larval consumption. Antibiosis appears to be due to the combined effects of a feeding deterrent and a growth inhibitor. Resistance is location-specific on (PI)227687 plants and occurs abruptly on the third fully-expanded leaf from the plant apex. Larval growth on leaves of the susceptible variety ‘Davis’ is similar to or greater than that of the upper, susceptible leaves of (PI)227687. Resistance appears to be chemically based, since larvae fed artificial diets containing leaf extracts exhibit antibiotic symptoms similar to those fed fresh (PI)227687 leaves.
