The present study aims to describe a new genus and species of microphalloid digenean parasite of two species of bats of the genus Peropteryx from the Mexican Neotropics (in the states of Chiapas and Yucatán). Morphological and molecular data (28s rDNA ribosomal gene sequences) were used to study Digeneans. Sagittatrema zutzi gen. nov. sp., nov., is diagnosed morphologically by having a sagittiform body, a genital pore in the midline of the body, posterior to the ventral sucker, and a cirrus sac running through much of the diameter of the ventral sucker. The nine sequences generated from the 28S rDNA gene were used to examine the phylogenetic affinities of this new taxon within the superfamily Microphalloidea Ward, 1901, using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses. Both analyses resulted in trees with similar topologies and formed a well-supported clade (Bt = 100; pp = 1) with the Sagittatrema sequences. Because of the new genus’s phylogenetic position and that some sister families to the proposed taxa, like Pleurogenidae and Prosthogonimidae, are polyphyletic, we prefer to consider Sagittatrema as a genus incertae sedis within Microphalloidea. A full systematic review of microphalloids is needed to confirm their phylogenetic position.

The subfamily Polycerinae includes eight genera, from the monospecific Lamellana and Lecithophorus to the diverse Polycera and Gymnodoris, with 33 and 26 valid species, respectively. The monophyly of the subfamily has been tested by molecular data although not all genera were included. To date, relationships within the subfamily are not supported. In the present paper, three new species of polycerid nudibranchs are fully described based on specimens collected in Marshall Islands and Australia: one Palio species (Palio gaeli sp. nov.), one Polycera species (Polycera nimbsi sp. nov.) and a new genus (Paliota galactica gen. and sp. nov.). The new genus is described based on its peculiar radular teeth and genetic divergence.

The internal anatomy was studied by dissections and scanning electron microscope photographs. Partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) as well as nuclear histone H3 (H3) were also obtained. A phylogenetic framework for two of these three species is proposed, also including for the first time the species Paliolla templadoi and Polycera melanosticta.

Two new genera and six new species of benthic amphipods from the soft sediments of the Perdido Fold Belt region, western Gulf of Mexico, are described. Morphological comparisons of the new species with description of their congeners resulted in the determination of one new genus and one new species of the family Melitidae as Dentimelita lecroyae gen. nov., sp. nov., one new genus and four new species of the family Pardaliscidae as Pardaliscella perdido sp. nov., Paraeperopeus longirostris gen. nov., sp. nov., Pardaliscoides ecosur sp. nov. and Tosilus cigomensis sp. nov., and one new species of the family Unciolidae as Neohela winfieldi sp. nov. The occurrence of the newly described amphipods in the Perdido Fold Belt region represented new geographic range extensions for the genera, including new records of Neohela in the Gulf of Mexico, Pardaliscella and Pardaliscoides in the western Atlantic and Tosilus in the Atlantic.

The Mesozoic is considered as the ‘golden age’ for the diversification of Neuroptera (lacewings), and many unusual lacewing larvae have been discovered in Cretaceous amber. However, little is known about their early evolution because of the rarity of fossils. Herein, we describe a new genus and species, Kuafupolydentes hui gen. et sp. nov., one of the biggest lacewing larvae from the Cretaceous known so far, based on a well-preserved specimen from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber (99 Ma). The new larva is characterized by its large size, each stylet with eight short and blunt teeth, robust and long antennae, and long and robust legs with continuous tarsus and tibia and enlarged claws. It can be considered as an early representative of the antlion clade, Myrmeleontiformia. We suggest that the new larva is also an ambush predator like extant antlions, but it might have used a different strategy to kill large prey. Some of the morphological characters of K. hui are unknown in any extant lacewings and suggest a greater morphological disparity of Neuroptera during the Cretaceous.

A new family, Worcestobiidae fam. nov., is established for two Triassic fossil species of Mecoptera removed from the family Orthophlebiidae: Orthophlebia gigantea Tillyard, 1933 and O. haradai Ueda, 1991. A new genus, Worcestobia gen. nov., is erected and both species are transferred to this genus. The new taxa were established as a result of ongoing taxonomic work on Orthophlebiidae, one of the most problematic families within fossil Mecoptera, considered to be a paraphyletic group of species.

We present the first specific record of a chironomid of the tribe Tanytarsini from early Eocene Cambay amber, India (52–53 Ma). The oldest known extinct tanytarsine genus, Gujaratomyia Giłka & Zakrzewska, gen. nov., is described on the basis of adult males of G. miripes Giłka & Zakrzewska, sp. nov. The species displays an unusual leg structure with unique leg ratios and tibial armature. The combination of the head and genital apparatus characters supports the hypothesis that Gujaratomyia and Cladotanytarsus are members of a common group within the subtribe Tanytarsina.

In the fourth paper about Ampharetidae from Japan, we describe 12 species in seven genera. The genus Orochi gen. nov. and the eight species Amage ehlersi sp. nov., A. longitorus sp. nov., Glyphanostomum hesslei sp. nov., Lysippe nipponica sp. nov., Melinnopsis augeneri sp. nov., M. mcintoshi sp. nov., Orochi palacephalus gen. et sp. nov., and Samytha annenkovae sp. nov. are newly described. Orochi gen. nov. is characterized by the shovel-like prostomium, the high membrane, from which all four pairs of branchiae emerge and the presence of neuropodia of the abdominal type in the last thoracic unciniger. In the discussions of the remaining genera, we comment on the taxonomic changes suggested by Jirkov (2011). Furthermore, we provide a list of all Ampharetidae species that have been recorded from Japan.

In the third paper about Ampharetidae from Japan, we describe six species that belong to the ‘Amphicteis genus complex’. We divide this complex into the genera Amphicteis Grube, 1850, Paramphicteis Caullery, 1944, Phyllamphicteis Augener, 1918 and Watatsumi gen. nov. Paramphicteis is considered senior synonym of Pseudoamphicteis Hutchings, 1977 and is characterized by pinnate buccal tentacles. Watatsumi gen. nov. with its type species Watatsumi grubei sp. nov. is characterized by the lack of prostomial glandular ridges, the presence of pinnate buccal tentacles, and inconspicuous nuchal ridges. Two of the Amphicteis species are new to science, including A. spinosa sp. nov. and A. taurus sp. nov. Paramphicteis weberi (Caullery, 1944) comb. nov. was transferred from Amphicteis because we found pinnate buccal tentacles in addition to four pairs of foliose branchiae. Paramphicteis foliata (Haswell, 1883) comb. nov. was transferred from Phyllamphicteis because it has pinnate buccal tentacles. Amphicteis uncopalea Chamberlin, 1919 and Paramphicteis angustifolia (Grube, 1878) are newly recorded from Japanese waters. Amphicteis orphnius Chamberlin, 1919 is considered senior synonym of A. obscurior Chamberlin, 1919. A comprehensive table with diagnostic characters of all species of the Amphicteis complex with pinnate buccal tentacles is provided.

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are found on the insular and continental slopes of Caribbean islands and comprise mainly scleractinian corals, sponges and macroalgae. These species provide habitat for a highly diverse and specialized crustacean fauna. A new genus and species of the family Louriniidae is described from samples taken from an MCE in south-west Puerto Rico. The new taxa can be diagnosed by: body elongate, almost cylindrical and with inconspicuous podoplean boundary between prosome and urosome; double genital somite with a discontinuous chitinized cuticular ridge; telson short with rectangular anal operculum; furca short; rostrum sinusoidal, well defined at the base; antennules 7-segmented with aesthetasc on the fourth segment; antenna with a brush-like basal seta and an abexopodal seta, exopod 1-segmented with 2 setae; endopod with 7 elements (1 geniculate seta and 1 modified inner spine); maxilliped well developed, prehensile, composed of syncoxa, basis, one segmented endopod and one claw-like apical seta; leg 1 endopod 3-segmented, first segment with a modified inner seta; legs 2, 3 and 4 with 2-segmented endopod with inner seta on the first segment; leg 5 basendopod fused, well developed with 4 setae, exopod well developed, with 5 setae; leg 6 represented by a single seta; and genital slits wide apart. The new genus and species can be confidently assigned to the family Louriniidae on the basis of the following synapomorphies: rostrum well-developed with rounded tip; antennule of female 7-segmented; mandible palp reduced; maxillule endopod and exopod absent; maxillae endopodite 2 represented by 3 setae; leg 5 basoendopod of female confluent, intercoxal sclerite absent, exopod 1-segmented; eggs retained in a single ventral egg sac; telson shorter than last urosomite; and furca short and with 6 setae.

Cirratulus dollfusi Fauvel, 1928 is re-described from the material from the Sea of Marmara. The specimens collected from the Sea of Marmara were compared to the holotype of the species. The species is a multitentaculate and multibranchiate cirratulid; it differs from all other known cirratulid genera in its type of chaetae and the way the multiple branchial filaments arise from the notopodia. Chaetae are of two types: numerous long, fine capillaries in both rami throughout, also 2–4 shorter, wider, finely tapering spines in noto- and neuropodia. There are no slightly flattened sigmoid spines, typical of most Cirratulus species. Very short, slender grooved tentacles arise in a small circular group on either side of chaetiger 1. Branchial filaments are multiple; they arise as 1–2 filaments from each of 4–8 raised notopodial lobes on parapodia of anterior and middle segments, with lobes fading out and fewer (holotype) or no branchiae posteriorly (our material). No other cirratulid genera appear to have straight, tapering spines plus so many fine capillaries. We propose Fauvelicirratulus gen. nov. for this species. The species seems most closely related to Cirratulus hedgpethi Hartman, 1951, from the northern Gulf of Mexico, still only known from the incomplete original description. Features of some cirratulid genera are compared and the use of multiple branchiae as a generic character is discussed.

A new kinorhynch genus and species is described from coralline sand collected on the atoll of the Chuuk Islands, Micronesia. The new genus and species, Triodontoderes anulap gen. et sp. nov., is characterized by having an introvert with only five scalid rings, segment 1 consisting of one tergal and one sternal plate, segments 2 to 4 of one tergal and two sternal plates, and segments 5 to 11 of one tergal plate with midventral articulation. Triodontoderes anulap gen. et sp. nov. shares several characters with species of Zelinkaderes, including reduced number of scalid rings, distally tripartite placids, a trunk being circular in cross-section, and segments 5 to 10 being composed of a single tergal plate with midventral articulation. Until the kinorhynch relationships have been examined in a formal phylogenetic analysis, Triodontoderes gen. et sp. nov. are tentatively assigned to Zelinkaderidae.

A new interstitial hydroid, Sympagohydra tuuli, has been collected from the three-dimensional brine channel system of the coastal fast ice off Barrow, Alaska (71°N 156ºW) in 2003 to 2006. This is the first cnidarian species described from the sea ice interstitial habitat. A morphological and systematic account of the new species is provided here. The hydroid stage is represented by solitary naked polyps, which become almost spherical under contraction. Body length can vary from 200 µm to >1 mm according to the degree of relaxation. The aboral side is extensible into a tubular foot-like projection made by epidermal tissue only, a typical feature of representatives of Protohydridae, order Capitata. However, in contrast to the other two known Protohydridae species, S. tuuli is characterized by three to four solid filiform tentacles, armed with microbasic mastigophore and desmoneme cnidocysts, and located at the base of a short hypostome bearing stenoteles. A small number of mastigophores are also scattered along the body column. Due to its unique combination of features, this taxon is designated here as a new species, and the new genus Sympagohydra is established as a new member of the class Hydroidomedusa, subclass Anthomedusae, order Capitata, family Protohydridae, to accommodate S. tuuli.

Eurypterids from the Welsh Borderlands of England are redescribed from most available material. Hughmilleria banksii is here interpreted to represent a new genus. The poorly known Hughmilleria (?) acuminata (Salter, 1859a) is considered a junior synonym of H. banksii. Furthermore, Slimonia? stylops is suspected to be a junior synonym of Salteropterus abbreviatus, although they are not formally synonymized as the location of the only known specimen of S.? stylops is unknown. Morphological differences in carapace shape, eye position, walking leg, genital appendage and telson in H. banksii are noted compared to previous descriptions. A prosomal appendage earlier assigned to H. banksii is here assigned with caution to S. abbreviatus and the reported ‘segments’ in the posterior part of the telson of S. abbreviatus are shown to be cracks. The phylogenetic position of the new genus is inferred to lie between the Hughmilleria and the Slimonia/Salteropterus clades.

Macunahyphes, gen. nov. is proposed to include Tricorythodes australis (Banks). In the present paper, the new taxon is describedan illustrated from imagos and nymphs. The unique characters present in Macunahyphes gen. nov. are: in the male imago,(1) forceps tri-segmented with first segment distomedially projected, (2) penis with very wide base, becoming thinner toward asubapical constriction, and then slightly widening again, penis lobes of each side almost completely fused except apical insicion,(3) penes with a ventral projection covered with spines, and in the nymph, (4) glossae and paraglossae almost completelyfused, with a circular outline, and (5) femora with numerous robust serrate setae.

A new genus of hypogean Ostracoda, Marococandona nov. gen. from wells and springs in the Guelmin and Agadir regions(Southern Morocco) is described. This genus is close to the genus Candonopsis, but can be distinguished from this latter by severalcharacteristics : the rectangular shape of the carapace, the reduction of the antenna chaetotaxy, the lack of sexual dimorphismin the male antenna, the lack of setae on the protopodite of the second thoracopod, and on the two first articles of the third thoracopodendopodite. M. danielopoli n. sp. has primitive characters, with a normally segmented antennula, a ‘t’ seta on the antenna,and normally developed furcal claws. In contrast, the morphology of M. nicolae n. sp. is regressed, with a 5 segmentedantennula, no ‘t’ setae on the antenna, and a reduced furca. The two species live in highly mineralised water and seem poorlysensitive to groundwater pollution.

Pourriotia carcharodonta gen. et sp. nov. is described from freshwater plankton collected at the subantarctic Kerguelen islands. The new taxon is provisionally placed in the Notommatidae. Main diagnostic characters separating the new taxon and the other genera of the family are provided by the morphology of the trophi. Apical rami chambers with toothed inner margin and blunt projection on outer margin. Apical rami teeth and subuncinal teeth with accessory spines. Proximal margin of major uncinal teeth firmly connected to distal margin of apical chambers, forming grasping unit. Fulcrum dumb-bell-shaped. Information is presented on the trophi structure of the genus Pleurata (Notommatidae).

A characteristic, sterile lichen genus with homoiomerous thallus containing terpenoids is described, with one subtropical species, Kroswia crystalliferum sp. nov., occurring scattered in Africa from Kenya south to the Cape, southern India (with Sri Lanka) and Taiwan. Another temperate species, Kroswia gemmascens (Nyl.) comb, nov., is restricted to Eastern Asia. in spite of its gelatinous, homoiomerous thallus, the genus appears to belong to the Pannariaceae.

The new corticolous lichen genus Krogia and species K. coralloidesare described from humid forest in Mauritius. The genus shows affinities with Phyllopsora, but differs in characters of the ascus, ascospores, and thallus anatomy. The ascal characters make its inclusion in the Bacidiaceae or Phyllopsoraceae problematic. The lichen contains boninic acid and an apparently related compound.
