Summary

The clean energy transition needs a workforce. Yet despite the societal demand for green energy, this workforce does not yet exist at the scale required. We show how in addition to economic explanations for why participation in workforce programs struggles, political uncertainty also creates barriers. This becomes apparent when one considers how job and potential job seekers think about local economic opportunity. This chapter unpacks the concerns and motivations of job-seekers. We feature surveys of youths, including a survey of middle schoolers conducted by a school district in coal country. We show that making workforce programs more credible can create interest in these programs and broader support for energy transitions.

Numerous apprenticeship contracts survive among the papyri of Graeco-Roman Egypt, but scholars have been left guessing whether this documentation offers a sound comparison to job training in Classical Greece. This paper points out that such apprenticeship contracts are firmly attested in a work of Xenophon, revealing that, by the mid fourth century b.c., Athens was already home to the practice of formal apprenticeship.

Summary

Unique issues for women in the workforce include the need for more high-quality day care, more flexibility with leave time policies from employers, and more job training for women entering employment. Women with epilepsy who are working must confront the realities and dynamics of this contemporary environment while also living with the realities and dynamics of their condition. Before exploring specific facets of employment, this chapter examines factors common to the experience of epilepsy that make the disorder uniquely challenging. Many women with seizure disorders are successfully employed. Having epilepsy does not prevent women from having successful jobs and careers. It is important, however, that careful decisions are made, that support is sought when it would be beneficial, and that qualifications and experience are promoted as the most important factors in a successful job search.
