This contribution explores an aspect of boat burials in the second half of the first millennium AD across Northern Europe, specifically boat burials that included equipment for board games (surviving variously as boards and playing pieces, playing pieces only, or dice and playing pieces). Entangled aspects of identity, gender, cosmogony, performance, and commemoration are considered within a framework of cultural citation and connection between death and play. The crux of this article's citational thrust is the notion of quoting life in the rituals surrounding death. This was done both in the service of the deceased and in the service of those wanting to remember the deceased, the argument distills around the biographical trajectories or the different social and individual uses to which people put ostensibly simple things such as gaming pieces.

Social and economie exchanges often occur between strangers who cannot rely on past behavior or the prospect of future interactions to establish mutual trust. Game theorists formalize this problem in several “one-shot” game – such as the trust game - predicting noncooperation – since the investor is not expecting trustee to reciprocate it is not rationally to invest. Bohnet and Zeckhauser (2004) suggest that, due to betrayal aversion, people seek to avoid situation in which one could be betrayed. We argue that this behavior could emerge also due to regret aversion.

The sheet metal forming by shearing is one of the most used processes in industries. The reliability of the obtained parts depends on geometrical parameters (shape of the tools, punch radius, clearances, velocity...) and materials properties (metal behavior, friction...). In this paper, two experimental parameters are investigated: the punch – die clearance and the punch velocity. A 0.65 mm thickness sheet of a non-oriented full-process Fe-(wt.3%)Si is used. The analyses are done through the load-stroke curve and the height repartition of different defects on the part edge. A numerical approach is proposed to simulate the shearing process and to handle the ductile fracture (which is performed using Abaqus/Explicit software). This work is based on a non-iterative explicit algorithm combined with a mesh adaptivity method (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation). The Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman model is then used to describe the cut edge profile occurring during the process.

The purpose of this exploratory, phenomenological-hermeneutic study was to explore the experience of non-problem gambling by older adults. Twelve older gamblers were identified as non-problem gamblers using two gambling screens and participated in in-depth interviews about their experience of gambling. Two major themes emerged from the interviews: the attractions of gambling and methods to keep gambling in control. Older persons sought out gambling for a variety of reasons: social contact, the food and the excitement, chances to give to charity, chances to have an inexpensive holiday, and the need for a safe way to be “bad”. Participants also described a number of cognitive and behavioural strategies to keep their gambling from becoming a problem. The results of this small exploratory study suggest that gambling is a popular form of social entertainment for older persons, although the main attractions of gambling have little or nothing to do with gambling itself. Older persons also appear to possess numerous strategies to keep gambling from becoming a problem.

Nous nous intéressons dans cette étude à un modèle dynamique non-linéaire d'un engrenage droit à un degré de liberté. Ce modèle permet de prendre en compte la présence du jeu entre dents ainsi que la non-linéarité de la raideur d'engrènement associée à l'évolution instantanée du nombre de dents en prise. Notre étude concerne le cas d'engrenages corrigés par des corrections linéaires en tête de denture ainsi que des engrenages non corrigés. Le but de cette étude a été d'analyser la pertinence de ce modèle vis-à-vis de résultats expérimentaux mettant en œuvre un banc d'essais dont les caractéristiques, notamment aux niveaux de la micro-géométrie des dentures, sont parfaitement contrôlées. En conclusion, les résultats comparatifs sont encourageants, même si nous n'avons pas pu reproduire par simulation certains phénomènes non-linéaires observés. Parmi ceux-ci, on peut citer le cas de la cascade harmonique observée sur un engrenage corrigé et prenant naissance au niveau de la résonance principale.
