This article, written by Mark Hatcher, provides an overview of the background and achievements of the Bar Council, the professional body for barristers in England and Wales, since its formation in 1894. It traces the early years of the council and its expansion after the second world war, following the growth in legal aid and other post-war reconstruction measures. It describes changes in the structure and organisation of the Bar Council culminating in the implementation of reforms which followed the Legal Services Act 2007, which resulted in the separation of representation of the Bar from regulation of the profession which was delegated to the Bar Standards Board in 2006. Orbital resonances in the Galactic halo have been studied using the Galactic mass model of Pichardo et al. (2003, 2004), including a Galactic bar. For the two moving groups of the Galactic halo, G18-39 and G21-22 (Silva et al. 2012), the majority of stars in both groups appear trapped in two resonances over the Galactic plane, generated by the bar. We have taken the rotation speed of the bar, Ωb, as 45-55 km s-1 kpc-1. So, these two moving groups are part of stellar supergroups which populate these two resonances. The position of these two groups in the Bottlinger diagram can be explained by the mean (U,V) field generated by these two resonances crossing the solar vicinity, in contrast with the alternate explanation of Silva et al. (2012), based on the simulations of Meza et al. (2005), that these two groups, seen as two peaks in the U Galactic velocity, have been created by the accretion of a dwarf galaxy by the Milky Way, such as that of Ω Centauri.

The transmission of tuberculosis (TB) in bars is difficult to study. The objective was to describe a large TB outbreak in a company's bar and other leisure settings. A descriptive study of a TB outbreak was carried out. Contacts were studied in the index case's workplace bar (five circles of contacts) and other recreational areas (social network of three bars in the index case's neighbourhood). Chest X-rays were recommended to contacts with positive tuberculin skin tests (TST) (⩾5 mm). The risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) was determined using an adjusted odds ratio. The dose–response relationship was determined using the chi-square test for linear trend. We studied 316 contacts at the index case's workplace and detected five new cases of TB. The prevalence of LTBI was 57·9% (183/316) and was higher in the first circle, 96·0% (24/25), and lower in the fifth, 46·5% (20/43) (P < 0·0001). Among 58 contacts in the three neighbourhood bars, two TB cases were detected and the LTBI prevalence was 51·7% (30/58). Two children of one secondary TB company patient became ill. Bars may be transmission locations for TB and, as they are popular venues for social events, should be considered as potential areas of exposure.

We have measured orientation-discrimination thresholds of 4 deg in the cat, confirming an earlier study of Vandenbussche and Orban (1983). Unlike Vandenbussche and Orban (1983), we found that orientation-discrimination performance is not better at principal, as compared to oblique, reference orientations (no oblique effect). Despite the absence of the oblique effect, and despite the discrimination thresholds which were elevated by a factor of 4 compared to humans, orientation-discrimination performance of cats and humans is qualitatively similar in a number of aspects. First, orientation-discrimination performance as a function of length and contrast is qualitatively similar to human performance. Second, as in humans, detection and discrimination of the stimuli are closely related. Finally, randomizing the contrast between the stimuli does not affect orientation-discrimination performance. This suggests that similar computations underlay orientation-discrimination performance in both species. In summary, our results confirm that the cat is a useful model for human orientation-discrimination performance.

The FEM is used to study the effects of notch opening angle (β) and notch radius on the new strain-concentration factor (SNCF) for circumferentially V-notched cylindrical bars under static tension. The new SNCF has been defined under the triaxial stress state at the net section. Nevertheless, the conventional SNCF has been defined under uniaxial stress state. The new SNCF () is constant in the elastic deformation. The range where this elastic value remains constant increases with increasing β and increasing notch radius (ρo). The effect of the notch opening angle on the elastic decreases with increasing ρo. Particularly, the elastic of β = 120° is the minimum for all notch radii employed. The new SNCF increases from its elastic value to a peak value and then decreases with plastic deformation for notches with β = 120°. This peak value is the maximum . Nevertheless, for the notches with β < 120° becomes nearly constant or slightly decreasing after the first peak for ρo = 0.5 and 1mm. After that it increases to the maximum SNCF and then slightly decreases for further plastic deformation. The variations in with the ratio of tensile load to that at yielding at the notch root (P/PY) are nearly independent of stress-strain curve up to general yielding.

Guy Holborn, Librarian of Lincoln's Inn, considers whether the Inns of Court libraries have a future in the digital age. He discusses their longevity and their context within the profession. Unfortunately, the past gives several examples of such libraries which have not survived, but he is confident that history will not repeat itself.

Two groups of sea bass (mean initial weight 78 and 250 g) were given for 23 weeks a commercial diet, whose composition was modified or not (control). The modified diet was: — supplemented with highly oxidized fish oil, — poorly supplemented with ascorbic acid, — not supplemented with butylated hydroxytoluene, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate and choline. At the end of the experiment, fish fed the modified diet displayed skeletal muscle degeneration, decreased red blood cell count, haemoglobin content and haematocrit, and increased crythrocyte fragility and plasma enzyme activity (aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase). Simultaneously, low DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate levels and increased amounts of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were observed in muscle and liver. On the other hand, growth disorders, liver lesions, changed plasma enzyme activity (alanine aminotransferase, glutathione peroxydase), or altered conjugated dienes in perivisceral fat were not evidenced. The pathological observations were more pronounced on the smaller fish group, but the disease could already be detected by measuring haematological and biochemical criteria, the interest of which in the diagnosis of such nutritional disease is discussed.

This paper concerns eggs of captive fish and gonads of wild fish, from the Brittany coast obtained in the 7-18 °C thermal range. The diameters of eggs, 1.07-1.32 mm are compared to those observed in other areas, especially along the Mediterranean coast. The duration of embryogenesis as a function of temperature and the efficiency of different incubators are discussed. The quality of eggs in relation with larval survival is discussed through the biochemical composition of the eggs collected in captivity compared to that of wild fish gonads. The absolute values of lipids, proteins, fatty acids, lipid classes, phosphatides and minerals measured, also the positive relations obtained between egg dry weight, diameters, mortality during incubation are presented as criteria of egg quality.

This paper describes the large-scale production of eggs and larvae of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and shows how spawning can be planned to produce viable eggs throughout the year by manipulation of photoperiod and temperature. The rearing temperature was 9.5-22 °C during spawning and 9-24 °C during the gametogenesis. The photoperiodic cycles tested were normal (i. e. the photoperiodic cycle observed at Palavas-les-Flots, mediterranean coast, France, 1984/1987) advanced by 3 to 5 months and delayed by 2 months.
