The frameworks of Baikov–Gazizov–Ibragimov (BGI) and Fushchich–Shtelen (FS) approximate symmetries are used to study symmetry properties of partial differential equations with a small parameter. In general, it is shown that unlike the case of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), unstable BGI point symmetries of unperturbed partial differential equations (PDEs) do not necessarily yield local approximate symmetries for the perturbed model. While some relations between the BGI and FS approaches can be established, the two methods yield different approximate symmetry classifications. Detailed classifications are presented for two nonlinear PDE families. The second family includes a one-dimensional wave equation describing the wave motion in a hyperelastic material with a single family of fibers. For this model, approximate symmetries can be used to compute approximate closed-form solutions. Wave breaking times are found numerically and using the approximate solutions, which yield comparable results.

Repetitive Markov processes form a class of processes where the generator matrix has a particular repeating form. Many queueing models fall in this category such as M/M/1 queues, quasi-birth-and-death processes, and processes with M/G/1 or GI/M/1 generator matrices. In this paper, a new iterative scheme is proposed for computing the stationary probabilities of such processes. An infinite state process is approximated by a finite state process by lumping an infinite number of states into a super-state. What we call the feedback rate, the conditional expected rate of flow from the super-state to the remaining states, given the process is in the super-state, is approximated simultaneously with the steady state probabilities. The method is theoretically developed and numerically tested for quasi-birth-and-death processes. It turns out that the new concept of the feedback rate can be effectively used in computing the stationary probabilities.

The approximate two- and three-dimensional solutions for spatial correlations, using the non-linear time-series approach for nearest-neighbour systems developed in my previous paper, are further discussed.

Orthogonal expansions for the correlation functions are also developed which determine with this approach, though so far only in principle, the exact solutions.
