In this article, the material distributive topology-based design optimization of ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna is proposed by using improved binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) with finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. In the improved BPSO implementation, the velocity of each particle is calculated based on complete set of bits of particle position vector. The V-shaped transfer function is employed to transform all real values of velocities to values in the interval [0,1]. The fitness function of all the particles in BPSO algorithm are computed parallely by using FDTD simulation. The usage of FDTD and the parallel computation helps in analyzing the broadband frequency characteristics of the antenna with a single simulation run. The return loss of the optimized UWB antenna obtained from FDTD, Computer Simulation Technology (CST) simulation and practical measurement are in good agreement and show good impedance matching.

This paper presents the design of a split-ring resonators (SRR) loaded coplanar waveguide-fed ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna. As using the electromagnetic coupling SRR connected by open-ended microstrip lines, this UWB antenna achieves wide band-notched characteristics. The frequency of the proposed antenna operates from 2.37 to 10.93 GHz with a broad notch band covers from 4.96 to 6.15 GHz (IEEE 802.11.ac), the relative stopped bandwidth of the notch band achieves 20.42%. Besides, theoretical analysis and experimental results are proposed to illustrate and validate this proposed antenna.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) slot antenna for diversity applications is introduced. The overall structure of the antenna consists of two similar coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed stepped rectangular slots placed in an orthogonal position. The slots are asymmetric with respect to their placement in the ground plane. The CPW feeds are double stepped and terminated on hexagonal patches for better impedance matching. A wide impedance bandwidth (measured) from 3 to 12 GHz with an isolation better than 15 dB is obtained with this antenna. To improve the isolation, the design is modified and an I-shaped slot strip is introduced between the two slot antennas. With this, the isolation is brought about 25 dB of most of the band, while the impedance bandwidth remains the same (2.8–12 GHz for port 1, measured and 2.9–12 GHz for port 2, measured). The far-field radiation patterns are also measured and a peak gain of about 5 dBi is obtained. Finally, the diversity parameters such as envelope correlation coefficient and capacity loss are calculated and found to have low values. The antenna is expected to be useful for UWB diversity applications with good isolation.

In this paper, a microstrip fed, L-shape slot antenna for dual polarization is proposed. The two arms of the slot generate electric fields of orthogonal polarizations. By properly sectioning the slot and the feed line, ultra wideband (UWB) behavior is obtained. The measured impedance bandwidth (S11< −10 dB) is more than 8.6 GHz (112%) and 8.2 GHz (104%) for Port 1 and Port 2, respectively. The measured isolation is better than 25 dB over most of the band. The aperture field distribution justifies the dual polarized nature. A modified version which implements a band-notch over 5.1–5.85 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) band is also presented. With a compact, single substrate design, the antenna can be useful in MIMO transmission systems, polarimetric UWB radar, high performance microwave imaging, and other future wireless communications devices.

In this paper, we propose a novel integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna with dual-band antenna. The antenna consists of planar rectangular with semi-elliptical base and a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with dual-band operation. Both of them are excited via coplanar waveguide (CPW) lines. The experimental measurements show that the planar monopole provides an impedance bandwidth between 2.44 and 11.9 GHz which largely covers the entire UWB spectrum, and the rectangular DRA operates at two bands; 5.3–6.2 and 8.5–9.4 GHz. Additionally, the proposed structure ensures low mutual coupling between the two ports (with S21 less than −20 dB in the whole operating frequency band). The measured and numerical results show a good agreement.

In this paper a novel differentially fed Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) antenna in low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) technology to be used in the 60 GHz band for integrated RF front-ends is presented. The antenna is based on the aperture stacked patch fed via H-shaped aperture to achieve more than 10 GHz operational bandwidth. The antenna is fed by a parallel-wire transmission line which enables the antenna to be directly integrated with differential Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs). To alleviate influence of the surface waves (efficiently excited in LTCC material due to its high dielectric constant) on the antenna radiation and realize uni-directional radiation patterns, a dedicated shield is added to the antenna. The measured results of the shielded antenna showed that the antenna has an operational bandwidth from 51 GHz to over 65 GHz, the gain is about 3.5–8 dBi, and −5 dB beamwidth is about ±30°. The measurement results also demonstrated that the shield indeed improves the antenna impedance bandwidth, gain, and radiation patterns substantially.
