Many have expressed concerns regarding the replicability of scientific research. However, little of this ongoing discussion has focused on research examining the production of vowels and consonants or the many important choices that researchers must make in pre-analysis phases of speech production research. The literature reviewed here indicates that not all speech production studies have been replicated, and that how speech is elicited may affect the results that are obtained. Many different elicitation techniques are in current use, but none represents a gold standard. The new Characteristic Speech Production (CSP) technique presented here aims to augment replicability by obviating the need for participants to accommodate their speech to that of others or adopt a particular speaking style as they give meaningful answers to meaningful questions. Given the novelty of the CSP technique, the chapter provides a protocol that is designed to test its efficacy. If the CSP technique can be shown to yield speech samples that are more representative of individuals’ speech than a standard list-reading technique, a change in how speech is elicited for production research will be warranted.

This chapter examines the acquisition of vowels and consonants in perception and production during typical second language (L2) acquisition by sequential, dominant bilinguals. The acoustic and articulatory studies reviewed serve to illustrate general patterns of L2 segmental learning with a focus on four principal themes, each structured around one or two main research questions: 1) cross-linguistic influence (How does a sequential, dominant bilingual’s first language shape L2 segmental perception and production?); 2) development (Are there universal patterns to L2 segmental speech development? Are certain vocalic and consonantal phenomena acquired more easily?); 3) inter- and intralearner variability (What are the sources of differences in perception and/or production between learners and for the same learner over time and in different communicative contexts?); and 4) training effects (What are the effects of training on learning? How do variables such as task and stimuli type condition effectiveness?).

This chapter reviews the last twenty-five years of L2 prosody research in three sections, word stress, sentence intonation, and rhythm, and presents findings in relation to two underlying themes, form-meaning mapping and additive versus subtractive bilingual contexts. Concerning L2 stress, pioneering research framed perception difficulties either as an L1-to-L2 cue-transfer problem or as a processing deficit linked to learners’ inability to represent contrastive stress in their lexicons. Recent research established the extent and limits of those initial frames. L2 sentence intonation has multiple factors modeling its variation. One of them, social meaning, and in particular accommodation literature revealed the effect of affective factors which in multilingual communities became stronger than that of linguistic and social factors. As regards L2 rhythm, most research uses duration-based measures. Indeed, recent L1 studies started examining pitch-based rhythm measures which are still to be explored in L2. Ending with suggestions for future research that address those biases, this chapter aims at promoting a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of L2 prosody.

Geneviève Calbris’ semiotic study of French gestures began in the 1970s and shows how gestural signs interface between the concrete and the abstract. Created by analogical links originating in physical experience of the world via processes of mimesis and metonymy, they are activated by contexts of use and constitute diverse semantic constructions: Gesture is able to evoke several notions alternatively (polysemy) or simultaneously (polysign). As expressions of perceptual schemas extracted from physical experience, they prefigure concepts. A Saussurean perspective brings to light relations between physical features of gestures (signifiers) and the notions (signifieds) they are apt to evoke; it reveals signifiers that are common to different gestures (paradigmatic axis of substitution) and how signifiers interweave in gestural sequencing (syntagmatic axis of combination). Gesture expresses, animates, explains, synthesizes information, and anticipates speech. We highlight its utterance functions, its simultaneous multireferentiality, the gestural anticipation of verbal information, and the interplay of tension-relaxation between conversation partners that this can create.

Symbolic tools represent, organize, and transform our knowledge of objects and events. The acquisition and internalization of symbolic tools change the way we think about the world. Different cultural subgroups use different symbolic tools and as a result, they shape their cognitive processes, even those as basic as spatial memory, differently. Moreover, some of the psychological functions that at the first glance should progress developmentally irrespective of the person’s experience actually depend on the acquisition and mastery of specific tools, for example, the graphic representation of objects. Even in societies with formal educational systems, the teaching of symbolic tools as tools is often neglected. Tables, graphs, and formulae appear as a part of the content material instead of being learned as specific tools. Many of the problem-solving mistakes made by students, for example in international exams such as PISA and TIMMS, reflect their poor mastery of symbolic tools rather than a lack of curricular knowledge. Educational interventions aimed at teaching students how to identify and apply the instrumental properties of symbolic tools lead to improved problem-solving in subjects ranging from mathematics to foreign language learning.

Chapter 2: Building Blocks of Fluency and Comprehension. This chapter describes the many component skills and knowledge resources that contribute to reading fluency and reading comprehension. Key component skills addressed include word recognition, orthographic processing, letter-sound correspondences, sight word reading, morphological processing, phonological processing, spelling knowledge and orthographic mapping, syntactic processing, semantic processing, semantic proposition formation, working memory (central executive, phonological loop, episodic buffer), long-term memory, and cognitive executive functions. Other concepts introduced along with component skills include the self-teaching hypothesis, statistical learning, the alphabetic principle, implicit learning, connectionism, lexical access, automaticity, the Lexical Quality Hypothesis, spreading activation, priming effects, word-to-text integration, chunking, meta-linguistic awareness, good-enough parsing, now-or-never processing, chunk-and-pass processing, and usage-based approaches to language learning. The chapter closes with implications for instruction.

Chapter 3: Comprehension Processes. This chapter describes higher-level processes and how both lower- and higher-level processes work together to form a mental text representation and a situation model of reading. Key features of higher-level processing include the following: text representation, situation model processing skills associated with working memory, background knowledge, and executive function resources. Key concepts include passive resonance processing, bridging inferences, the now-or-never bottleneck, lexical processing, incremental item-based learning, Kintsch’s Construction-Integration model of reading, a two-level account of reading comprehension, genre variations in text processing, working memory as executive function, other executive functions, attentional processing, inferencing, metacognitive and metalinguistic awareness, strategy use, goal setting, and comprehension monitoring. The chapter concludes with implications for instruction.

Chapter 1: The Nature of Reading. This chapter provides foundations for the entire book in ways not typically discussed on other reading volumes. It begins with a view of literacy worldwide and then develops the concept of “purposes for reading” because reading skills vary in their activations depending on the reading purpose. A taxonomy of types of reading are discussed, but all types carry a core of reading ability more generally. The taxonomy of “purposes” is also validated by a number of specific research studies. The second major concept introduced is a generalized definition of reading ability, which is described in some depth. A third concept introduced is the “standard of coherence” required for reading purpose and task completion, a fourth concept introduced is a current and widely accepted theory of learning with reference to learning to read (ACT learning theory). The chapter closes with the first installment of a consistent features of the book: “Implications for Instruction.”

The phonological component of the working memory system is specialized in maintaining a sequence of verbal items (digits, letters, words, pseudowords) over a very short period of time. Therefore, a central issue has been why we are provided with such ability, and what is its functional role. A series of studies on healthy people, on children learning their mother tongue, on children and young adults learning a second language and, crucially, on neuropsychological patients with a selective deficit of auditory-verbal short-term memory has clearly shown that a fundamental function is to maintain a new phonological representation for a period of time long enough to build permanent phonological representations. This is exactly what happens when we learn a new language. In this chapter I will report converging evidence involving different languages showing how this important result has been obtained.

A writer, film director, photographer, and artist, the author’s reflection comprises the opening pages of an essay and an autobiographical fragment presenting his mixed-origin multilingual family. The short final section, ‘Border Tax’, extracted from the same essay, reflects on power relations strategies and the high economic and political stakes of multilingual verbal interaction. The economic metaphor of a border tax to convey the idea that an accent is the price to be paid for speaking a foreign language is striking as a reminder of the hybrid character of language: linguistic transparency and purity, and sharply delimited bilingualism, are delusions. Accents are described as markers of belonging; they are shown to convey fine nuances of identity, to carry with them distant or lost worlds. In contrast with the usual perception of accent as something to be erased, the author prizes accent as a remnant of the past in the present, or of far-off places in the here and now. The price to be paid to speak a second language well can be a high one, and our sights should not be set too high for our students, as we cannot know how high the price will be for them.

In this chapter, the author, as a psychiatrist who has written books on Louis-Ferdinand Céline and Samuel Beckett, both writers who push back the limits of literary writing, focuses on Beckett's change of literary language, not from the starting point of exophonic writing and self-translation, as most critics writing on Beckett’s bilingualism usually do, but ‘from underneath’, making this change of literary language appear as an apparent severing of links to continue writing on the ‘maternal side of language’. The author brings his specialist knowledge of adolescent care to bear on his subject and explodes some of the myths surrounding Beckett’s change of language, such as the famous ‘no style’ of French and the idea of a ‘counter-language’ to ward off the ‘(s)Mother tongue’. The author presents Beckett’s use of French as a paradoxically regressive move, which allows him to live ‘in exile within exile’, to set up the conditions of ‘nostalgia’ by putting the distance of the foreign language to the service of a risky regression to infancy in search of the body, in search of sensory perception and archaic aggressivity: a language ‘beyond the verb’.
