We use the fact that the Palm measure of a stationary random measure is invariant to phase space change to generalize the light traffic formula initially obtained for stationary processes on a line to general spaces. This formula gives a first-order expansion for the expectation of a functional of the random measure when its intensity vanishes. This generalization leads to new algorithms for estimating gradients of functionals of geometrical random processes.

This paper focuses on the stability of open queueing systems under stationary ergodic assumptions. It defines a set of conditions, the monotone separable framework, ensuring that the stability region is given by the following saturation rule: ‘saturate' the queues which are fed by the external arrival stream; look at the ‘intensity' μ of the departure stream in this saturated system; then stability holds whenever the intensity of the arrival process, say λ satisfies the condition λ < μ, whereas the network is unstable if λ > μ. Whenever the stability condition is satisfied, it is also shown that certain state variables associated with the network admit a finite stationary regime which is constructed pathwise using a Loynes-type backward argument. This framework involves two main pathwise properties, external monotonicity and separability, which are satisfied by several classical queueing networks. The main tool for the proof of this rule is subadditive ergodic theory. It is shown that, for various problems, the proposed method provides an alternative to the methods based on Harris recurrence and regeneration; this is particularly true in the Markov case, where we show that the distributional assumptions commonly made on service or arrival times so as to ensure Harris recurrence can in fact be relaxed.

This article reviews results related to event and time averages (EATA) for point process models, including PASTA, ASTA and ANTIPASTA under general hypotheses. In particular, the results for the stationary case relating the Palm and martingale approach are reviewed. The non-stationary case is discussed in the martingale framework where minimal conditions for ASTA generalizing earlier work are presented in a unified framework for the discrete- and continuous-time cases. In addition, necessary and sufficient conditions for ASTA to hold in the stationary case are discussed in the case even when stochastic intensities may not exist and a short proof of the ANTIPASTA results known to date are given.

We consider a fork-join network with arrival and service times forming a stationary and ergodic process. The usual stability condition, namely that the input rate is strictly less than all the service rates, is proved to be valid in this general case. Finally we extend the result to the case where there is random routing.

We consider a stochastic process in continuous time and two point processes on the real line, all jointly stationary. We show that under a certain mixing condition the values of the process at the points of the second point process converge weakly under the Palm distribution with respect to the first point process, and we identify the limit. This result is a supplement to two other known results which are mentioned below.

We consider queueing systems where the stationary state probabilities are insensitive with respect to the distribution of certain basic random variables such as service requirements, interarrival times, repair times, etc. The conditional expected sojourn times are stated as Radon–Nikodym densities of the stationary distribution at jump points of the queueing system. The conditions are the given values of such basic random variables for which the insensitivity is valid. We use stationary point processes as our main tool. This means that dependences between certain basic random variables are permitted. Conditional expected real service times, conditional mean response times in closed queueing networks, and similar conditional expected values, are dealt with as special cases.

Starting with a stationary point process on the line with points one unit apart, simultaneously replace each point by a point located uniformly between the original point and its right-hand neighbor. Iterating this transformation, we obtain convergence to a limiting point process, which we are able to identify. The example of the uniform distribution is for purposes of illustration only; in fact, convergence is obtained for almost any distribution on [0, 1]. In the more general setting, we prove the limiting distribution is invariant under the above transformation, and that for each such transformation, a large class of initial processes leads to the same invariant distribution. We also examine the covariance of the limiting sequence of interval lengths. Finally, we identify those invariant distributions with independent interval lengths, and the transformations from which they arise.

This paper provides a rigorous foundation for the second-order analysis of stationary point processes on general spaces. It illuminates the results of Bartlett on spatial point processes, and covers the point processes of stochastic geometry, including the line and hyperplane processes of Davidson and Krickeberg. The main tool is the decomposition of moment measures pioneered by Krickeberg and Vere-Jones. Finally some practical aspects of the analysis of point processes are discussed.
