With recent epidemics such as COVID-19, H1N1 and SARS causing devastating financial loss to the economy, it is important that insurance companies plan for financial costs of epidemics. This article proposes a new methodology for epidemic and insurance modelling by combining the existing deterministic compartmental models and the Markov multiple state models to facilitate actuarial computations to design new health insurance plans that cover epidemics. Our method is inspired by the seminal paper (Feng and Garrido (2011) North American Actuarial Journal, 15, 112–136.) of Feng and Garrido and complements the work of Hillairet and Lopez et al. in Hillairet and Lopez ((2021) Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, 2021(8), 671–694.) and Hillairet et al. ((2022) Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 107, 88–101.) In this work, we use the deterministic SIR model and the Eyam epidemic data set to provide numerical illustrations for our method.

We prove that, for Poisson transmission and recovery processes, the classic susceptible→infected→recovered (SIR) epidemic model of Kermack and McKendrick provides, for any given time t>0, a strict lower bound on the expected number of susceptibles and a strict upper bound on the expected number of recoveries in the general stochastic SIR epidemic. The proof is based on the recent message passing representation of SIR epidemics applied to a complete graph.

We propose a class of random scale-free spatial networks with nested community structures called SHEM and analyze Reed–Frost epidemics with community related independent transmissions. We show that in a specific example of the SHEM the epidemic threshold may be trivial or not as a function of the relation among community sizes, distribution of the number of communities, and transmission rates.

A feature often observed in epidemiological networks is significant heterogeneity indegree. A popular modelling approach to this has been to consider large populations withhighly heterogeneous discrete contact rates. This paper defines an individual-levelnon-Markovian stochastic process that converges on standard ODE models of such populationsin the appropriate asymptotic limit. A generalised Sellke construction is derived for thismodel, and this is then used to consider final outcomes in the case where heterogeneityfollows a truncated Zipf distribution.

The aim of this paper is to study the stochastic monotonicity and continuity properties of the extinction time of Bellman-Harris branching processes depending on their reproduction laws. Moreover, we show their applications in an epidemiological context, obtaining an optimal criterion to establish the proportion of susceptible individuals in a given population that must be vaccinated in order to eliminate an infectious disease. First the spread of infection is modelled by a Bellman-Harris branching process. Finally, we provide a simulation-based method to determine the optimal vaccination policies.

We exhibit a scaling law for the critical SIS stochastic epidemic. If at time 0 the population consists of infected and susceptible individuals, then when the time and the number currently infected are both scaled by , the resulting process converges, as N → ∞, to a diffusion process related to the Feller diffusion by a change of drift. As a consequence, the rescaled size of the epidemic has a limit law that coincides with that of a first passage time for the standard Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. These results are the analogs for the SIS epidemic of results of Martin-Löf (1998) and Aldous (1997) for the simple SIR epidemic.
