The purpose of this study was to assess whether or not the questionnaire developed by Hahn, Cella, Bode, and Hanharan (2010) for use with cancer patients accurately measures the social well-being of individuals suffering from chronic illnesses associated with asbestos poisoning. One hundred ten male patients with asbestos poisoning were age-matched in blocks to a comparison group of 70 “healthy” controls, all of whom were current or retired employees of the largest naval company in Spain. The results indicate very high reliability of the Hahn et al. (2010) test to assess social well-being in these chronically ill patients, and a high concurrent validity of the measured outcomes with regard to results of the SCL-90 Derogatis questionnaire, especially on the social well-being dimensions of negative emotional support, negative social companionship, and satisfaction. Limitations of the study and possible future directions are discussed.

Tens of thousands of workers participated in rescue, recovery, and cleanup activities at the World Trade Center (WTC) site in lower Manhattan after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11). The collapse of the WTC resulted in the release of a variety of airborne toxicants. To date, respiratory symptoms and diseases have been among the most examined health outcomes in studies of WTC disaster workers. A systematic review of the literature on respiratory health outcomes was undertaken to describe the available information on new onset of respiratory symptoms and diseases among WTC disaster workers after September 11, 2001. Independent risk factors for respiratory health outcomes included being caught in the dust and debris cloud, early arrival at the WTC site, longer duration of work, and delaying mask and respirator use. Methodological challenges in epidemiologic studies of WTC disaster workers involved study design, exposure misclassification, and limited information on potential confounders and effect modifiers. In the 10 years after 9/11, epidemiologic studies of WTC disaster workers have been essential in investigating the respiratory health consequences of WTC exposure. Longitudinal studies along with continued medical surveillance will be vital in understanding the long-term respiratory burden associated with occupational WTC exposure. Back and neck pain is an established occupational disease for many professions. No previous studies have shown the association of back and neck pain with ENT surgery. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of neck and back pain in ENT consultants in the United Kingdom and which sub-specialities were most at risk. A national survey from 325 ENT consultants in the UK revealed that 72 per cent had either back pain or neck pain or even both. Of those with pain 53 per cent attributed their symptoms directly to ENT surgery. Highest figures were received from otologists, related to microscope work and prolonged sitting. The importance of these findings has demonstrated the lack of awareness and adequate training to prevent long-term disability in ENT surgeons.

The authors present a case report of a retired furniture worker who initially presented with a mucin-secreting adenocarinoma of the right ethmoid sinus. He underwent surgical resection, leaving the nasal septum intact, and topical treatment with 5-fluorouracil. He remained disease free. Three years after his initial presentation he was found to have a left nasal polyp on routine examination. This subsequently proved to be a second primary adenocarcinoma. A review of the literature has not shown any other cases of a second primary adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses.

The civil claim of occupational rhinitis may be difficult to prove on the balance of probabilities and is the responsibility of the claimant. There are two types of occupational rhinitis, an allergic rhinitis or a rhinitis due to irritation. Occupational rhinitis can be likened to occupational asthma. Particular attention must be paid to the relationship to alleged exposure and symptoms. Irritation causes symptoms during exposure that cease afterwards unless clinically obvious damage has occurred. Tobacco smoke and nicotine may also cause symptoms. A full examination, both externally and internally of the nose, mouth and eyes should be undertaken. The presence of squamous metaplasia is important. The validity of a claimant’s symptoms must be checked against the medical records. Details of all occupations, compounds and protection should be noted. Manufacturing data on the compounds should also be obtained. The Health and Safety Executive publish occupational exposure limits for many industrial chemicals. Allergen-specific IgE may be raised when an allergy is considered to cause the occupational rhinitis. Nasal challenge tests have been used in Scandinavia to diagnose allergic occupational rhinitis. The sense of smell should be tested. There are two approaches, detecting threshold or recognition, which is suprathreshold. When present, three degrees of social effect occur: impairment, disability and handicap. The degree depends on the occupation of the individual.

Otitis externa is only occasionally occupational in origin and infestations of the ear are even less common. Two cases of occupational otitis externa due to infestation with Dermanyssus gallinae, the red poultry mite, are reported occurring in poultry workers.

A case of occupational rhinitis in association with natural rubber latex hypersensitivity is presented. In the nasal provocation test for natural rubber latex glove powder the nurse experienced rhinorrhoea. A significant increase in the amount of nasal secretion and mucosal oedema could be detected. The patient also showed a positive skin prick test to natural rubber latex allergens, and an elevated natural rubber specific IgE level in her serum. This, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported in the literature.
