Hydrothermal chlorite replaces igneous biotite in the Gold Hill, Utah, quartz monzonite. Chemical compositions of coexisting biotite and chlorite determined by electron microprobe and wet chemical methods were used to evaluate chemical mass transfer during the alteration process. The mole ratio Mg/(Mg + Fe) varies from 0.52 to 0.65 in the chlorite and from 0.51 to 0.60 in the parent biotite. The Mg content of the chlorite decreases systematically with increase in the volume percent replacement of biotite. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in nearby quartz microveinlets indicate that the chloritic alteration took place at approximately 200°C.

Textural relationships suggest that the alteration of biotite to chlorite is isovolumetric, but a comparison of mineral compositions and mineral assemblages with phase diagrams in which Al or volume are conserved among solid phases suggests that the chlorite compositions are best explained as a function of reaction progress in an Al-conservative system. The chlorite composition changes in response to changes in solution composition produced by the dissolution of successive small amounts of biotite. Representative mass balance for the alteration of all of the biotite to chlorite in 1 m3 of rock containing 336 moles of biotite indicates that 74 moles of Mg, 35 moles of Fe3+, 420 moles of H+, and 2 moles of Mn are added to the rock and that 311 moles of K, 54 moles of Fe2+, 76 moles of Ti, 53 moles of F, and 6 moles of Cl are lost to solution. The mass transfer for partially altered biotite is 11 to 188 moles of K, 2 to 46 moles of Ti, 2 to 44 moles of F, and 0.3 to 6 moles of Cl removed per cubic meter of rock and 1 to 26 moles of Fe3+ and 20 to 347 moles of H+ added. The mass transfer of Mg varies from 12 moles added to 32 moles removed per cubic meter of rock depending on mineral composition and extent of replacement.

The residual kaolin deposits near Lastarria, South-Central Chile, were formed by weathering of subvolcanic quartz porphyry stocks, which intruded the metamorphic basement of the Coastal Cordillera. The clay fractions (<2 µm) consist mainly of poorly-ordered, very fine-grained kaolinite and lath-shaped illite (17–38 wt. %) with minor amounts of quartz, sanidine, and goethite. A sample from the top of the deposit contains major quantities of gibbsite morphologically indistinguishable from kaolinite flakes. The gibbsite-free clays contain 35.5–36.6 wt. % Al2O3, 0.4–2.6 wt. % Fe2O3, 1.3–3.9 wt. % K2O, and have low TiO2 concentrations (<0.02 wt. %). The absence of quartz veining, the abundance of melt inclusions, and the scarcity of secondary fluid inclusions in quartz phenocrysts from altered rocks imply a lack of significant hydrothermal activity in the quartz porphyries. The δ 18O and δD values of the kaolins indicate formation in a weathering environment at significantly higher annual mean air temperatures (∼12°C) than present mean temperatures of ∼9.4°C. Uplift of the region alone probably cannot account for the change in climate. The stable isotope composition of gibbsite is consistent with an origin of desilication of kaolinite at superficial temperatures. Various criteria proposed to distinguish supergene from hypogene kaolins are discussed.

A stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10–8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, 14C activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Comparisons of speleothem records show that isotope peaks at ca. 8.5 ka are related to a regional climate anomaly, rather than to a continental-scale event. In accordance with regional proxy records, the 8.2 ka event was associated with a series of temperature and precipitation amount changes, starting with cooling and a reduction in the winter-to-summer precipitation ratio, and then becoming a humid and warm phase at 8.15 ka. X-ray diffraction-based crystallinity parameter (FWHM) values provided evidence for diagenetic alteration of the stable oxygen isotope compositions of inclusion waters. Nevertheless, the stable hydrogen isotope compositions of inclusion waters and the oxygen isotope values of the host calcite revealed elevated d-excess values, and therefore increased Mediterranean moisture contribution during the 8.2 ka event, which indirectly indicate the southward displacement of moisture transport from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Middle Eocene Senj Mo–Cu deposit (1.3 Mt at 1.5 wt % Cu and 0.2 wt % Mo) is located in the central Alborz magmatic belt, northern Iran. Mineralization is characterized by multistage veins, which are hosted in volcanic and volcano-sedimentary strata of the Karaj Formation (c. 41–45 Ma), genetically associated with the Senj Mafic Sill (c. 40 Ma). Four generations of veins are documented based on mineral assemblages and cross-cutting relationships, sequentially: quartz–biotite–chalcopyrite (QBC veins), quartz–molybdenum (QM veins), quartz–pyrite (QP veins) and late calcite (LC veins). Three types of fluid inclusions (FIs) are present in multistage veins: liquid-rich two-phase (L-type), vapour-rich two-phase (V-type) and solid-bearing multi-phase (S-type) inclusions. FIs in the QBC and QM veins are predominantly V-type and S-type, together with minor L-type, whereas the QP and LC vein minerals only contain L-type fluid inclusions. The homogenization temperatures of FIs from QBC to LC veins vary from 320 to 425 °C, 308 to 390 °C, 214 to 288 °C and 145 to 243 °C, and their salinities range from 5.3 to 49.0, 6.2 to 39.7, 5.7 to 13.0, and 2.1 to 7.2 wt % NaCl equiv., respectively. The H–O–C isotope compositions favour a dominantly magmatic origin for the hydrothermal fluids, which were gradually diluted by meteoric waters. The S–Pb isotope data of sulphide minerals indicate that the sulphur and metals were sourced from a deep-seated magmatic reservoir. The Senj Mafic Sill and associated Mo–Cu mineralization was developed in a back-arc extension regime, which faults and crustal fracture systems served as conduits for hydrothermal fluid circulation and Mo-rich veining.

Fluid-inclusion studies were conducted on amethyst quartz from three different geological environments: basalt cavities; hydrothermal veins; and granitic pegmatites of Eastern Brazil, to understand the conditions of amethyst crystallisation in each of these environments. In samples from basalt cavities, fluid inclusions are exclusively one-phase aqueous types suggesting a low-temperature formation environment. Crystals from the two other environments show that fluid inclusions can be either one-phase aqueous, two-phase aqueous, three-phase aqueous carbonic, or three-phase aqueous with the presence of precipitated solid halite. The carbonic composition of the system H2O–CO2–NaCl was confirmed by Raman spectroscopic analysis and suggests a metamorphic or magmatic fluid source. Fluid inclusions trapped in samples from hydrothermal veins reveal at least two different fluid generations based on homogenisation temperatures. The first generation has minimum trapping temperatures between 249°C and 391°C. The second generation of lower temperature fluids has minimum trapping temperatures varying from 82°C to 203°C. Fluid inclusions of this group record eutectic temperatures that indicate the presence of Ca and Fe cations in addition to Na. Fluid inclusions trapped in amethyst from a pegmatite body have moderate salinity values between 15 and 25 eq. wt.% NaCl, thus reflecting the elevated salt content in pegmatite-forming fluids. In this sample, the first fluid generation is represented by aqueous fluid inclusions with minimum trapping temperatures ranging from 268°C to 375°C. The estimated eutectic temperatures, generally below –50°C, indicate the presence of Ca cations in addition to Na. Minimum trapping temperatures correspond to temperatures of late-to-post-pegmatitic hydrothermal stages. The second generation records minimum trapping temperatures between 125°C and 247°C. Amethyst from both hydrothermal veins and pegmatite environments contain solid inclusions of hematite, an indication that the mineralising fluid was Fe rich and thus, possibly magmatic in origin.

The Haimur area represents the central part of the Wadi Allaqi region in the southern block of the Egyptian Eastern Desert near Nasser Lake and the Nile valley. It is made up of ophiolitic assemblage comprising serpentinite and talc carbonate, listwenite, metagabbro/amphibolite and metabasalt and island arc assemblages. The orogenic gold deposits in the Haimur area occur in the form of smoky/white sulphide-bearing quartz / quartz-carbonate veins or lenses cutting through the listwenite zone-related rocks. The NE-trending auriferous veins were formed due to an extensional to transtensional shearing related to NW Najd shear tectonics. Gold was observed in association with late-pyrite and chalcopyrite paragenetically formed in the gold phase (second phase), while the first phase is the sulphide phase including early-pyrite and arsenopyrite. Arsenopyrite was formed during early metamorphic recrystallization at a high-temperature range between 405 and 512 °C. However, gold was formed at lower temperature through retrograde metamorphism. Three types of fluid inclusions have been recognized: aqueous (type-I), mixed aqueous–carbonic (type-II) and hydrocarbonic (type-III). The P–T conditions of trapping were obtained from the isochore lines of intersection between T = 300–320 °C and pressure range of 60–180 MPa. The Haimur gold deposit was supposed to be derived from metamorphic fluids created by dehydration and decarbonation of ophiolitic mélange assemblages and volcano-sedimentary rocks, in which the gold was transported as Au(HS)2– complexes and precipitated in reduced environment. The strong linkage between the deformation and metamorphism triggered gold deposition in structurally favourable sites related to the Najd fault system.

Most skarns are found near the pluton or in lithologies containing at least some limestone. However, recent research has shown that neither a pluton nor limestone is necessarily required to form a skarn deposit. The newly discovered Bagenheigeqier Pb–Zn skarn deposit is located in NE China. The skarn and Pb–Zn orebodies occur in volcanic lithologies of the Baiyin’gaolao Formation and are controlled by NE–SW-trending faults. The nearest pluton is a granite porphyry, at a distance of 20–250 m from the orebodies. Five paragenetic stages at Bagenheigeqier are recognized: (I) skarn; (II) oxide; (III) early sulphide; (IV) late sulphide; and (V) late quartz–calcite. The fluid inclusions from stages II to V homogenized at temperatures of 402–452, 360–408, 274–319 and 167–212°C, respectively. The hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions (δ18OH2O, –12.4‰ to +9.3‰; δDH2O, –156.5‰ to –99.1‰) indicate that the ore-fluids were primarily of magmatic origin, with the proportion of meteoric water increasing during the progression of ore formation. Sulphur isotope values (δ34SVCDT, 1.4–5.5‰), lead isotope values (206Pb/204Pb, 18.184–18.717; 207Pb/204Pb, 15.520–15.875; 208Pb/204Pb, 37.991–38.379) and the initial 187Os/188Os ratios of the pyrite (0.307 ± 0.06) suggest that the ore metals were derived from the granite porphyry and Baiyin’gaolao Formation. Re–Os dating of pyrite intergrown with galena and sphalerite yielded a well-constrained isochron age of 151.2 ± 4.7 Ma, which is coeval with the laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry zircon U–Pb age of 154 ± 1 Ma for the granite porphyry. The deposit was therefore formed during Late Jurassic time.

In a study of wall-rock alteration in the 1.4 km long Würmtal adit at the Käfersteige hydrothermal vein deposit (northern Black Forest, Germany) illite was found to be the only clay mineral within the Bunter sandstone and intercalated claystone. Illite occurs mainly as a detrital mineral in the claystone, whereas it is hydrothermally neoformed in the sandstone, either in the pores or as an alteration product of K-feldspar. The extensive occurrence of authigenic illite along the entire 1.4 km long profile confirms that the fluids migrated far into the sandstone.

The authigenic illite formed during a first pulse of high-temperature fluids (Th of ~220°C) with a low salinity (~1 wt.% NaCleq). These fluids also dissolved Sr and Rb from detrital illite of the claystones at the vein. A later hydrothermal pulse with a lower temperature (~70–150°C) and higher salinity (21–28 wt.% NaCleq) silicified the sandstone adjacent to the vein and caused partial substitution of OH- by F- in the structure of the detrital and neoformed illite along the profile.

Within analytical error, the K-Ar dates for the neoformed illite of the <2 µm fraction are the same along the profile (~150 Ma). During this hydrothermal process, the age of the detrital illite within the claystone was reset from 310 to 190 Ma. The illite-rich <0.2 µm fractions yield ages of ~142 Ma (sandstone) indicating a Jurassic origin. The uniform age data for illite in the sandstone and in the claystone are probably due to extensive migration of hot fluids through the wall rocks.

The hydrothermal fluids are attributed to recycled meteoric water and brines that ascended from the basement into the cover rocks during the opening of the North Atlantic and/or the nearby Tethys area.

Multi-element crush-leach analysis of H2O-CO2 inclusion fluids from a suite of six vein samples from gold-quartz veins in the Brusson district demonstrates that their solute chemistry (c. 5 wt.% NaCl equivalent) is dominated by sodium chloride with lesser amounts of calcium bicarbonate, potassium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. The samples have been analysed both for gas species (CO2, H2O, N2 and H2S) and for Na, K, Li, Rb, Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Al, As, B, SO42−, F, Cl, Br and I. The fluids contain appreciable H2S (>10−3 molal), which correlates with the contents of As, CO2 and B. Concentrations of many cations remain similar irrespective of wall rock, but there is evidence of leaching of Li, and possibly I, from some wall rocks. Large variations in the K-content of the fluid may result from precipitation of sericite. The bicarbonate concentrations in the fluids, estimated from charge imbalance, are substantially less than their total CO2 content when trapped as single phase fluids, indicating a low pH. Sulphate : sulphide ratios suggest relatively reducing conditions, which is consistent with Fe concentrations significantly greater than Mn.

The gold-quartz veins formed as H2O-CO2 fluids of modest salinity and very uniform composition ascended from depth. Halogen ratios of the fluids are consistent with an ultimate origin for these fluids from deep-penetrating surface or connate waters although such a model requires extremely low fluid : rock ratios, to account for the hydrogen isotope composition of many similar deposits. There is as yet insufficient reference data to use halogen ratios as a rigorous test for the alternative model of an origin for the fluid by metamorphic devolatilisation.

Vein formation occurred throughout a deformation sequence which involved early transpressive ductile deformation through to late-kinematic transpressive brittle structures which host a series of gold prospects. Fluid inclusion data from (S1) fabric parallel veins associated with early deformation suggest that a low-salinity aqueous fluid, with a mean salinity of 6.4 wt.%, was present during peak metamorphism, Pelite mineralogy and isochores constrain peak metamorphism to the lowermost part of the upper greenschist facies at 325 to 425°C and 1.4 to 3.4 kbar.

Fluid inclusion data from auriferous and barren late-kinematic quartz veins, both containing unmixing assemblages of aqueo-carbonic inclusions with low salinities of ≈2.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., indicate unmixing occurred at 300°C and 1.5 kbar.

Volatiles (CO2, N2, CH4) are observed in all the late-kinematic veins. The N2 contents of veins with elevated gold grades are typically higher than those with low gold grades. N2 reaches 8.7 mole% in a vein with 0.49−4.6 p.p.m. Au compared to <1 mole% in a vein with <0.05 p.p.m. Au. The CH4 content of late kinematic veins is generally less than 1 mole% and shows no relative enrichment in mineralised veins. The generation of N2 in the mineralising fluid most likely results from interaction of fluid with the ammonium ion, NH4+, in micas and feldspars. This interaction could take place either at source, due to metamorphic devolatisation reactions, or along those structures which acted as fluid conduits due to fluid-rock interaction.

The Iblean Plateau (Southeastern Sicily, Italy) consists of a thick Meso-Cenozoic carbonate sequence with interbedded volcanic horizons (alkaline and tholeiitic basalts). The alkaline basalts contain ultramafic (peridotites and pyroxenites) and mafic xenoliths. The peridotites are spinel-bearing lherzolites and lherzolitic harzburgites, with porphyroblastic to protogranular texture. Pyroxenites consist of Cr-diopside-bearing and Al-augite-bearing websterites. The mineral chemistry of the nodules indicates temperatures between 700 and 1050°C.

Fluid inclusions containing CO2 and (sometimes) various proportions of silicate glass have been studied in olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene. The secondary inclusions occur as trails of CO2-rich inclusions, often cross-cutting deformation lamellae. The few primary inclusions, generally empty, show clear evidence of decrepitation. Of the 390 inclusions examined, 97% homogenized to the liquid phase (Th → L = −43.9 to +30.9°C); 3% homogenized to the vapour phase (Th → V = + 20.5 to +30.3°C, yelding CO2 densities in the range 0.20–1.13 g/cm3. Assuming a trapping temperature of 1100°C, the corresponding trapping pressure for a pure CO2 system lies in the range 0.6–11.0 kbar, i.e. a depth of ∼2.2 to 42 km.

The majority of CO2 trapping events in the xenoliths occurred from 2.2 to 11.0 kbar, with no major trapping events at pressures less than 2.3 kbar, indicating the absence of a shallow magma reservoir below the Iblean Plateau.

The Mari Rosa mine lies within a low-grade Precambrian alternating series of black shales and metagreywackes in the Spanish Hercynian massif. There are two generations of mineralized veins: V2, gold-(stibnite)-bearing quartz veins, parallel to the main cleavage, and V3, stibnite-bearing quartz veins which postdate the main deformation event.

Four main types of inclusions have been identified. Type I, II and IV are aqueous-carbonaceous inclusions, with variable degrees of filling, while type III are non-aqueous and typically single-phase at room temperature. Except for type I (absent in V3), similar inclusions have been observed in both V2 and V3 veins. Gas compositions are always characterised by CH4-N2-CO2 assemblages, ranging from CO2-rich mixtures in the earliest inclusions (type I), to N2-rich mixtures in the latest inclusions (type IV).

Gold precipitation in V2 veins can be related to type I inclusions at T > 380°C (TH = 300–380°C). A subsequent drop in XCO2 and cooling are recorded in type II and III inclusions, interpreted to be the result of unmixing of a previously homogeneous fluid derived from type I. This boiling would provoke the precipitation of stibnite at 300°C and 1 kbar. The type IV inclusions, which are the richest in H2O, represent a late fluid circulation at lower temperatures (TH = 190–280°C).

In the Apuane Alps (AA) metamorphic core complex, syn-metamorphic mineral deposits are mainly restricted to extensional shear zones in the Lower Plate Palaeozoic basement. By contrast, the extension structures at upper levels, such as the detachment fault, that are typically the seat of fluid circulation and mineralization in other core complexes, are barren in the AA. Extension veins hosted by the Jurassic Carrara marbles are among the few examples of (minor) mineralization located in the upper levels of the AA core complex. Calcite–dolomite geothermometry and fluid inclusion data suggest that the mineralizing process in these veins began under pressure (P)-temperature (T) conditions close to the metamorphic peak (about 400°C, 3 kbar). Progressive cooling and mixing between metamorphic and late stage meteoric fluids were probably responsible for most of the mineral deposition. Batches of relatively saline fluids presumably resulted from interaction with evaporitic levels located along the detachment fault. In agreement with previous estimates, fluid inclusion constraints on the P—T synmetamorphic path of the AA suggest a relatively rapid cooling of the core complex as a result of uplift. However, the maximum estimated geothermal gradient (about 35°C/km) is considerably lower than in other core complexes, where large-scale hydrothermal circulation was associated with extension and uplift. Hence, in the AA, fluid circulation at shallow levels and mixing among fluids of different origin were not favoured, thus precluding the formation of mineral deposits along major extensional structures.

Diagenetic palaeotemperatures determined from aqueous fluid inclusions can be affected by re-equilibration during burial heating. Calculations based on the observed behaviour of inclusions in fluorite under external confining pressure allows prediction of the temperatures and depths of burial necessary to initiate re-equilibration of aqueous inclusions in the common size range 40 to 4 µm. Heating of 20° to 60°C over the initial trapping temperature may cause errors of 10° to 20°C in the homogenization temperature. This suggests re-equilibration may cause aqueous inclusions in carbonates to yield a poor record of their low-temperature history, but a useful record of the maximum temperature experienced by the host rock. Previous work suggests inclusions containing petroleum fluids will be less susceptible to re-equilibration.

Large thenardite crystals have been sampled at New Agorgott, in the Taoudenni area of northern Mali. They are still in equilibrium with a pressurized NaCl saturated brine capped by a halite layer. Clays located about 1 m above the thenardite occurrence have been dated at 6760 y.BP. The crystals contain numerous, large, brine and solid inclusions. Microcryscopic studies show that the fluids can be explained by the addition of MgCl2 to the Na2SO4-NaCl-H2O system (eutectic temperature: −31 to −35°C; possible bloedite Na2Mg(SO4)2.4H2O formed after freezing). The homogenization temperatures of primary fluid inclusions are in the range 28 to 50°C. In order to understand the significance of the highest Th values, overheating experiments under 1 bar pressure were performed at different heating rates up to 170°C. The results are as follows:

• (i) When the temperature of stretching (TOh) is higher than about 10°C, overheating is recorded and fossilized (identical Th after some hours, several days or 8 months storage at 5°C).

• (ii) The lowest Th values (28°C) are probably near the formation temperature of thenardite; the highest ones reflect stretching under present desert conditions.

• (iii) With TOh lower than about 60°C, a fair correlation is observed between Th and TOh.

Finally, taking into account recent natural overheating, the fluid inclusion data are compatible with the formation of thenardite from underground brines later than the beginning of desert conditions in the Taoudenni area (i.e. about 3000 y.BP).

The Penouta deposit is associated with a small Hercynian apogranite stock that intrudes Precambrian-Cambrian gneisses of the Ollo de Sapo Formation. Tin ore occurs as disseminations of cassiterite in the apogranite and as greisenized zones and quartz veins which traverse both the alkaline leucogranite and the surrounding metamorphic country rocks.

A fluid-inclusion study, utilizing microthermometric, crushing tests and Raman spectroscopic techniques on quartz from an intragranitic vein and a greisen of the host rock, indicates that the evolution of fluids was similar in both samples and occurred in the three main stages: The first stage is characterized by complex CO2 (CO2-N2-CH4-H2S) and complex CO2 aqueous (H2O-NaCl-CO2-N2-CH4-H2S) fluids of low salinity (Tm ice > −6°C), homogenization temperatures between 250 and 410°C homogenization pressures below 900 bars, and thermobarometric trapping conditions with temperatures below 700°C and pressures below 3250 bars. These fluids were probably responsible for the greisenization of the apogranite and wall rocks, and the precipitation of cassiterite. The second stage is represented by low-salinity aqueous solutions (H2O-NaCl) with Tm ice ⩾ −4.5°C, trapped at homogenization temperatures between 110 and 300 °C and homogenization pressures below 100 bars. This stage can be correlated with kaolinization. The third stage is characterized by higher salinity aqueous fluids (Tm ice ⩾ −16.5°C) containing Na+ and other cations, trapped at homogenization temperatures between 100 and 130°C and homogenization pressures below 5 bars. These fluids can be associated with the epigenetic or supergene phases of the orebody.

Wolframite-bearing quartz veins from Garganta de los Montes, Madrid province, are hosted by banded gneisses that have undergone intense migmatization processes. The ore deposit is closely related to the La Cabrera granitic batholith. The veins strike 075° and dip 75°S. The mineral association includes wolframite, quartz and minor amounts of scheelite and sulphides (sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, stannite and marcasite). The fluid phases associated with quartz from the vein margin (early barren quartz) and from the vein centre (late wolframite-bearing quartz) have been studied using microthermometry, scanning electron microscopy and crushing test analyses. Four hydrothermal stages have been distinguished.

The earliest fluids, only recognized in the barren quartz, contain brine, daughter phase (halite) and trapped minerals. The second hydrothermal stage is characterized by complex carbonic-aqueous inclusions of low salinity (3 to 7 wt.% eq. NaC1) and low density (0.4 to 0.7 g.cm−3). They mainly homogenize into liquid between 300 and 420°C. The third stage is represented by low to moderate salinity inclusions (<9 wt. % eq. NaCl) of moderate density (0.8 to 0.96 g.cm−3), homogenizing between 120° and 330°C. The latest fluids correspond to aqueous solutions of higher salinities (H2O-NaCl, with Ca2+ and Mg2+) and densities (>1 g.cm−3), with TH ranging between 50 and 130°C. The role of the complex-carbonic aqueous fluids in the transport and precipitation of tungsten is highlighted.
