When tank mixed with certain boadleaf-selective herbicides, fluazifop {(+)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, and fluazifop-P {(R)-2-[4-[[5-trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} were less effective in controlling two annual grasses, Texas panicum (Panicum texanum Buckl. #3 PANTE) and large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA]. These herbicides were applied alone or were combined with the broadleaf-selective herbicides bentazon {3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,l,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one-2,2-dioxide} and/or 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butanoic acid]. The herbicide combinations controlled smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L. # AMACH) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L. #CYPES). Increasing the rates of the grass-selective herbicides in the mixture reduced the adverse effects of 2,4-DB or bentazon.

Field studies were conducted from 1986 through 1988 to evaluate various herbicides for yellow nutsedge control and peanut yields. Three applications of pyridate provided control comparable to two applications of bentazon with yellow nutsedge regrowth beginning 3 to 4 wk after application depending on moisture conditions. Crop oil concentrate did not improve the activity of pyridate. Flurtamone provided control comparable with that of metolachlor. Nutsedge control with fomesafen was erratic with peanut injury noted. Peanut yields did not reflect the competitive nature of nutsedge.

Field studies were conducted from 1991 through 1993 to compare Weed control, peanut tolerance, yield, and net return from imazethapyr applied alone or in combination with paraquat. Sicklepod and Florida beggarweed were controlled with paraquat early POST followed by a POST application of either paraquat with 2,4-DB or paraquat with 2,4-DB and bentazon. Imazethapyr-based early POST treatments offered no improvement. An early POST application of paraquat with bentazon or imazethapyr was required for maximum control of bristly starbur. Imazethapyr applied alone early POST, with no further treatment, provided optimum yellow nutsedge control. Maximum yield and net return were associated with any paraquat-containing early POST-applied treatment followed by one of the tank mixed POST options.

Sensitivity of 49 tomato cultivars and four weeds to DPX-E9636 was determined in greenhouse experiments. Cultivar tolerance varied from completely tolerant to intolerant. The most efficacious application method in greenhouse experiments was early POST for the weeds tested (yellow nutsedge, prostrate eclipta, and paraquat-resistant and -sensitive American black nightshade). Paraquat-resistant American black nightshade was 123 times more sensitive to DPX-E9636 than the paraquat-sensitive biotype. Under field conditions and at 0, 36, or 72 g ai/ha applied one week after transplanting, tomato cultivars showed no response to DPX-E9636 in visual vigor ratings 3 wk treatment, or in shoot fresh or dry weight 4 wk after treatment.

Field studies were conducted over 4 yr to evaluate weed control and soybean injury with sulfentrazone applied preplant incorporated or preemergence alone and in combination with imazaquin, metribuzin, or cloransulam. Sulfentrazone at 280 g ai/ha controlled yellow nutsedge, common waterhemp, ivyleaf morningglory, and velvetleaf 92 to 100% 56 days after planting (DAP). At 420 g/ha, sulfentrazone controlled giant foxtail 80 to 94% 21 DAP. Sulfentrazone controlled common ragweed 17 to 93% and common cocklebur 57 to 91%. Giant foxtail, common cocklebur, and common ragweed control with sulfentrazone at lower rates was improved with the addition of metribuzin or cloransulam. Sulfentrazone caused no visual soybean injury and did not reduce yield compared with standard herbicides.

Experiments were conducted in 1991 and 1992 to evaluate the weed control effectiveness from several rates of AC 263,222 applied PPI and PRE (36 and 72 g ai/ha), early POST (EPOST) (18, 36, 54, or 72 g/ha), POST (18, 36, 54, or 72 g/ha), and EPOST followed by (fb) POST (27 fb 27 g/ha or 36 fb 36 g/ha). These treatments were compared to the commercial standard of bentazon at 0.28 kg ai/ha plus paraquat at 0.14 kg ai/ha EPOST fb bentazon at 0.56 kg/ha plus paraquat at 0.14 kg/ha plus 2,4-DB at 0.28 kg ae/ha. Application method had little effect on weed control with AC 263,222. In contrast, application rate affected control. Purple nutsedge, yellow nutsedge, prickly sida, smallflower morningglory, bristly starbur, common cocklebur, and coffee senna were controlled at least 82% with AC 263,222 at 36 g/ha (one-half the maximum registered use rate) regardless of application method. AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha (registered use rate) controlled sicklepod 84 to 93%, Florida beggarweed 65 to 100%, and Ipomoea morningglory species 89 to 99%. A single application of AC 263,222 at 36 g/ha or more controlled all weeds (with the exception of Florida beggarweed) as well or greater than sequential applications of bentazon plus paraquat fb bentazon, paraquat, and 2,4-DB. All rates of AC 263,222 applied POST and all application methods of AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha had better yields than the pendimethalin control.

Experiments were conducted from 1991 through 1993 to evaluate AC 263,222 and imazethapyr for yellow and purple nutsedge control in peanut. AC 263,222 at 0.05 to 0.07 kg/ha controlled purple nutsedge (88 to 99% late season) whether applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), early postemergence (EPOST) at peanut emergence, or postemergence (POST). Yellow nutsedge control with AC 263,222 was inconsistent at the 0.04 kg/ha rate; however, the 0.05 and 0.07 rate gave 88% early season yellow nutsedge control, but late season control was variable. Yellow nutsedge control with soil-applied treatments of AC 263,222 and imazethapyr were similar but AC 263,222 provided better postemergence control than did imazethapyr. Purple nutsedge control was similar for both herbicides across all application methods.

Six multiple-cropping systems composed of: a) turnip (Brassica campestris spp. rapifera), corn (Zea mays L.), and snapbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.); b) turnip, peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), and snapbean; c) turnip, corn, and turnip; d) turnip, peanut, and turnip; e) snapbean, soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.); and f) turnip, cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.], and turnip were subjected to nematicide and weed control programs of cultivation or herbicides. Herbicide programs were superior to cultivation in control of weeds. Weeds remaining in the row following cultivation competed severely with crops. Weed species remaining were altered depending on the method of control and crop. Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L. ♯3 CYPES) increased rapidly in all herbicide programs but not in cultivated plots. Pigweeds (Amaranthus spp.) were controlled by herbicides but increased in cultivated plots. Corn, peanut, soybean, and spring snapbean yields were higher in herbicide treatments than in cultivated treatments. Cucumber was the only crop that had increased yields for both main effects, herbicide and nematicide. Turnip was consistently injured in herbicide treatments, which was believed to be caused by residues from previous crops interacting with pathogens and possible allelopathic effects of decaying organic matter.

Field studies were conducted from 1984 to 1986 to assess cabbage injury and yield response to several acetanilide herbicides. When incorporated, metolachlor significantly injured cabbage and reduced yields while post-transplant applications caused foliar flecking but did not reduce yields. Crop injury from pretransplant applications of 4.4 kg ai/ha was significant for all herbicides in both 1985 and 1986. Although total yields in 1985 and 1986 were comparable, maturity was delayed in 1986. With few exceptions, the acetanilides did not differ in either injury or yield-reducing potential. However, compared to trifluralin, metolachlor reduced yields in both years and at both rates.

The initial metabolism of acetochlor [2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)acetamide] in tolerant and susceptible plants was examined to determine if metabolism is a factor in the selective phytotoxicity of this herbicide. Six crop and ten weed species were used. In every case acetochlor was converted initially to thioether conjugates. In thirteen of the species, initial conjugation was with glutathione (GSH). The homoglutathione (hGSH) conjugate was formed in three legumes. Tolerant plant seedlings metabolized acetochlor more readily than susceptible plant seedlings. Based on these results, acetochlor detoxification is a primary factor in the selective phytotoxicity of this herbicide.

The response of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L. #3 CYPES) and Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. # CIRAR] to combinations of low rates of fluridone {1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4(1H)-pyridinone} and bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,l,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] was determined in a controlled environment chamber and on Canada thistle in the field. In the growth chamber, injury to yellow nutsedge was increased with 24 g ai/ha fluridone combined with 323 g ai/ha bentazon. Either 2.7 or 5.4 g/ha fluridone combined with 27 g/ha bentazon caused uniform injury to Canada thistle. In the field, the combinations of 5.6 g/ha fluridone with either 28 or 2800 g/ha bentazon was phytotoxic to Canada thistle.

The experimental sulfonylurea herbicide ASC-67040 was evaluated preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) at 25 to 100 g ai/ha and PRE at 50 g/ha followed by ASC-67040 POST at 50 g/ha for broadleaf weed control in potato and tomato. In Virginia, ASC-67040 POST at 50 and 100 g/ha gave 70 to 98% control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, and jimsonweed with slight (0 to 6%) ‘Superior’ potato and moderate (0 to 23%) ‘Agriset’ tomato injury. This crop injury was present primarily as chlorosis in terminal growth and disappeared by 3 wk after treatment (WAT). Potato tuber and tomato fruit yields were high in ASC-67040-treated plots. In North Carolina, ASC-67040 PRE and POST at 50 and 100 g/ha controlled 10 species of annual broadleaf weeds and grasses, and at 25 g/ha ASC-67040 gave greater than 90% control of most species. ASC-67040 injured ‘Fontenot’ potato more than Superior and caused 10 to 13% injury to ‘Mountain Spring’ tomato but did not injure ‘Mountain Pride’ tomato. Mountain Spring tomato recovered rapidly and produced high yields. In the greenhouse, yellow nutsedge control by ASC-67040 POST at 25 to 100 g/ha was 59 to 86% 3 WAT and yellow nutsedge height, dry weight, and regrowth dry weight were reduced by all rates. Lower rates of ASC-67040 might control weeds and cause less injury to potato and tomato.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate halosulfuron tolerance of several squash and cucumber cultivars commonly grown in Georgia. There was an inverse linear relationship between squash plant biomass and rate of halosulfuron (r 2 = 0.70 to 0.92). With the exception of ‘Supersett’, the slopes from regression of all squash cultivars were equivalent. The estimated amount of halosulfuron required to reduce growth by 20%, based on regression, ranged from 8.2 to 45 g ai/ha (for Supersett and ‘Dixie’, respectively). Squash plant height was also reduced by halosulfuron, though plants began to recover from the injury by the end of the study. There was no effect of halosulfuron rate on cucumber plant biomass or height. Cucumber cultivars appeared to be more tolerant to halosulfuron than did squash cultivars.

A 3-yr field experiment was initiated in 2001 to evaluate weed suppression and sweetpotato productivity in three organic sweetpotato production systems. Organic systems were (1) compost and no cover crop with tillage (Org-NC), (2) compost and a cover crop mixture of hairy vetch and rye incorporated before transplanting (Org-CI), and (3) compost and the same cover crop mixture with reduced tillage (Org-RT). A conventional system with tillage and chemical controls (Conv) was included for comparison. Suppression of monocot and dicot weed density and biomass was similar between Org-NC and Org-CI each year, and were frequently similar to Conv. Org-RT was as effective as Org-NC in controlling dicot weed density and biomass each year, but did not suppress monocot weeds. At sweetpotato harvest, an increase in cover crop surface residue biomass in Org-RT was associated with a decrease in cumulative total weed density (R 2 = 0.43, P = 0.0001); however, the amount of that residue was insufficient to suppress late-emerging monocot weeds. Total sweetpotato yield in Org-RT was at least 45% lower than other systems in 2002 and was most likely due to an increase in monocot weed density and biomass concurrent with a decrease in sweetpotato vine biomass. Total sweetpotato yield was similar among all systems in 2001 and 2004; the exception was lowest yields obtained in the Org-RT system in 2002. Organically managed sweetpotato with or without an incorporated cover crop produced sweetpotato yields equal to conventionally managed systems despite difficulties controlling weeds that emerged later in the season.
