Mayr investigates song lyrics (proibidão) glorifying gang leaders in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. With her CDA approach and her use of Appraisal Theory she argues that proibidão, in fact, serves ideologically to recontextualise gang violence and legitimise favela criminals.

Ras looks at how British and American tax authorities (FSA, SEC) are portrayed in newspaper reports on corporate tax fraud. She combines CDA with corpus linguistics and analyses naming choices and transitivity as well as conceptual metaphors in a large dataset (corpus). Her objective is to demonstrate how power is wielded (in this case by large corporations) to influence the workings of the legal system.

Chapter 2 provides a review of the existing literature on the representation of, and attitudes towards, mental illness in a variety of text types (e.g. online data, newspaper data, spoken data) and across a range of analytical disciplines. In addition to exploring research on the representation of mental illness in these different data types and disciplines, the theoretical position of Social Constructionism (particularly in reference to CDA) is discussed.

Chapter 4 provides an overview of Analytical Methods in Critical Discourse Analysis, covering the early manifestations of linguistic inquiry into ideology in texts such as that of the East Anglia School (Fowler et al., 1979) to contemporary research into corpus-assisted discourse analysis that combines these early principles of CDA with computational methods. The notion that the automation of textual analysis offered by corpus linguistics provides a magic bullet for objectivity in CDA is discussed and contested. The different CDA methods used in the book are outlined. Specifically, Halliday’s transitivity model, taken from his model of Systemic Functional Linguistics (2003 [1973]), and naming analysis are discusssed and exemplified using relevant data.

This chapter analyzes news discourses covering the peace talks between the Pakistan government and the TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan), the culmination of which resulted in a military operation known as Zarb e Azab. The data are news stories extracted from mainstream English-language newspapers in Pakistan – Dawn and The Nation. The aim is to examine the types of discourses constructed by the print media during the peace talks. To achieve this, a qualitative analysis is employed comprising a socio-cognitive approach to CDA that focuses on the use of language and the ideological construction of peace and war situations. The chapter also highlights the importance of responsible and ethical journalism and professional journalistic practices that may help to refine the ideological sensibilities of journalists.

The IoT raises several questions germane to traditional products liability law and the UCC’s warranty provisions. These include how best to evaluate and remedy consumer harms related to insecure devices, malfunctioning devices, and the termination of services and software integral to a device’s operations. Consider that the modern IoT vehicle with an infotainment system generates massive quantities of data about drivers, and that mobile applications can be used to impact the operations of these vehicles.

As we have seen, the law wields considerable influence over the rights and remedies available to us as consumers. Several areas of commercial law are ill-equipped to sufficiently protect our consumer interests in the IoT age. This is because various legal frameworks governing commercial practices have not been sufficiently reformulated to account for the growing connections between the world of privacy and the world of commercial law. As earlier sections of this book have demonstrated, there are multiple legal frameworks impacting commercial practices at the federal and state level that are ripe for significant legal reform. These sources of law include contract law, the FAA, products liability law, the CDA, debt collection law, the Bankruptcy Code, and secured financing laws.
