You are awfully quiet
Blending into the hospital bed
Like a chameleon in distress

And although I cannot speak to you
In your native tongue
I will communicate through smiles and nods
Through pain scales and treatment regimens

Until we develop a shared understanding
Of our eagerness to experience
Each other’s customs
