An important step forward in astronomical optics, and one of an entirely novel kind, was made by Bernhard Schmidt in 1930 when he introduced the new type of optical system which bears his name. As you will remember, the Schmidt camera consists of a spherical mirror together with a nearly plane-parallel figured plate situated at the centre of curvature of the mirror, as shown in Fig. 1.
