In the discussion which followed the reading of my paper “Principles of Book-keeping for Insurance Students” (T.F.A. iv. 21), some remarks were made by Mr. M'Lauchlan about the Agents' Ledger, suggesting the possibility of doing without it. In the following paper I have attempted to show how this can be done, though I have gone on somewhat different lines from those he had in view at the time. Since this paper was written I have ascertained that some offices have dispensed with the Agents' Ledger, either altogether or to a large extent.

page 161 note 1 Mr. Brown's paper may not have received the attention it deserves because of certain requirements which he lays down. For example, he requires every premium received by the Office to be entered individually in one or other of the Cash Books; and he requires us to analyse all cash received for premiums into the various months when the premiums fall due. These requirements would involve a good deal of additional work, and in my opinion are in no way essential to his scheme, for the object in view, namely, to satisfy the Auditor that all income falling due has been collected, could, I believe, be attained much more simply. He also suggests preparing a full Revenue Account and Balance Sheet every week.
