1 Hindemith's first Solo Violin Sonata is op. 11 no. 6, from 1917–1918.
2 Smekkleysa's confusion arises from Leif's having arranged his Pastoral Variations on a theme of Beethoven (1930) for string quartet in 1937. That remains, as far as I judge, technically the first Icelandic string quartet score and is included in Smekkleysa's booklet listing the 52 Icelandic string quartets composed up to 2006. Leifs's Vita et mors is the earliest numbered Icelandic quartet; Helgi wrote a String Quartet No. 2 in 1940, making Theme with Variations and Fugue his No. 1 by default.
