The theoretical bases for deducing the solar abundance of helium from the determination of the H2/He mixing ratio in the giant planets are examined. The present state of the determination of the helium abundance is given. Experimental methods used to evaluate the H2/He ratio in the giant planets are critically reviewed. Methods in prospect are also briefly exposed.
