Lorenzo Campeggio was promoted by Pope Leo X as cardinal priest on 15 January and assigned the new title church of S. Tommaso in Parione on 24 January 1518, then translated to Sta Anastasia in 1519 after his return to the curia from England on 28 November (Eubel, Hierarchia catholica, III. 17).
This standard formula ‘de motu proprio et ex certa sciencia’ implied that the pope had granted these faculties on his own initiative and incontestably.
R: ‘dedimus et concessimus’.
R: ‘fuimus’.
R adds: ‘, vocatis tamen et in hoc Tibi assistentibus earum Ordinariis Episcopis et Praelatis, seu simul cum eisdem Ordinariis Episcopis et Praelatis,’.
R: ‘concessimus’.
R: ‘fecimus, constituimus et deputavimus’.
R adds: ‘proprio ac’.
R lacks ‘Henrici’.
R adds ‘tunc’.
R lacks ‘huiusmodi’.
R: ‘Extendimus et Prorogavimus’.
R: ‘Illustris [sic]’.
R: ‘relaxandi’.
R: ‘concessimus. Et successive’.
R adds: ‘nostras litteras’.
R lacks ‘sua et’.
R adds: ‘infra quod adhuc existis’.
R adds: ‘hujusmodi’.
R lacks ‘nuper’ (added here in reference to R).
R: ‘prorogamus’.
R lacks ‘et nonnullas facultates . . . tibi concessimus’.
R lacks the preceding text from ‘Ut igitur’; however, see n. 24.
This passage ‘Et insuper cupientes . . . legatione’ in R reads: ‘Nos, cupientes tuam honorare personam, utque Negotia per Nos Tibi commissa plenum consequantur effectum, et ut erga personas in locis tuae Legationis residentes et Familiares tuos continuos commensales ac alios quoscunque infra Limites tue Legationis, durante hujusmodi Legatione,’. The phrase here ‘utque . . . effectum’ is echoed above in ‘Ut igitur . . . effectum’.
R adds: ‘eidem Circumspectioni tue’.
R adds: ‘Officium Tabellionatus quibuscunque Personis ydoneis, recepto ab eis Juramento in forma solita, concedendi, illosque Tabelliones Creandi alias juxta formam in Quinterno Cancellariae Apostolicae descriptam’.
This passage ‘quotcumque . . . accolitos’ in R reads: ‘ac Milites Auratos Quinquaginta, et totidem Comites Palatinos, ac totidem Accolitos’.
Instead of ‘ac etiam quotcumque’ R has: ‘necnon quadraginta’.
R: ‘Apostolicae’.
R lacks ‘prefata’.
R: ‘dictae’.
R adds ‘favorabiliter’.
This inverts the phrase in R: ‘Notarii et Accoliti Capellani’.
R: ‘ac’.
R: ‘prius tamen’.
Constitutions of the Council of Vienne (1311–1312) appear in the canonical collection Clementinae, printed in Corpus iuris canonici, ed. E. Friedberg (Leipzig, 1879), II. 1128–1200.
R: ‘promovere’.
R adds ‘Immunitatibus,’.
R: ‘Praerogativis’.
From here down to ‘elargiendi ac indulgendi’ on fol. 112r the text diverges totally from R, which continues: ‘(cum) quibusvis Personis super quibusvis Natalium Defectibus et Irregularitatibus . . . dicere et recitare valeant, Concedendi’.
Marginal addition and deletion signed ‘Hip.’; this corrector's full name appears at the end of the document.
This presumably refers to the levirate, marriage to a dead brother's wife, which the Old Testament prohibited (Leviticus 18:16 and 20:21), except where the brother had died childless (Deuteronomy 20:5).
This passage ‘Ac easdem . . . concesseris,’ in R reads: ‘Ac omnes et singulos, quibus Gratias et Indulta hujusmodi, juxta Facultatem, quam ipsi in Litteris per Te expediendis inseri facere non teneantur, tibi concessam, concesseris seu erga quos hujusmodi Facultatibus uteris,’. The text then follows R, except where indicated below.
R: ‘erunt’.
This passage ‘ad suarum . .
R lacks this passage ‘Necnon quibuscumque . . . et facultatem’; the nearest equivalent in R, after (not before as here) the non obstante clause, reads: ‘Auctoritate Apostolica Tenore Praesentium Facultatem Concedimus, Tibique pariter Indulgemus.’
The four Lateran councils: I (1123); II (1139); III (1179); IV (1215).
Cardinal Otto de Monteferrato, Constitutiones (1237): Powicke, F. M. and Cheney, C. R., Councils & Synods, with other documents relating to the English Church 2: 1205–1313, 2 vols (Oxford, 1964)Google Scholar, I. 245–259. Ottobuono Fieschi, Constitutiones (1268): ibid. II. 747–792.
A far more elaborate non obstante clause than in R (‘Praemissis ac quibusvis Constitutionibus . . . nequaquam obstantibus’). Before the dating clause (obviously different again in R), R adds the formula ‘Nulli ergo omnino Hominum liceat hanc Paginam nostrae concessionis et Indulti infringere, etc.’
Presumably the scribe who engrossed the original letter. The person named below was the magister registri who collated and corrected this copy of the letter (see n. 41).
