page 275 note * It has been suggested by Mr. Franks that the two pieces of metal projected from the pointed ends of the boss, thus determining the length of the shield. A similar arrangement may be noticed on the buckler of a statue of a Gaulish warrior in the Musée Calvet at Avignon (see Revue Archéologique, N.S. vii. pi. xiii.), and the same principle is illustrated in the bosses of shields of the same period, now in the Musée de St. Germain, engraved in the same work; pl. xiv.
