As the child lies on the hospital bed
I cannot help but feel guilty
When he admonishes me
He states that he has never experienced change
And now that he had
It was for the worse
He voices discontent
With the lack of life in the expressionless room
So we paint –
He dreams of dragons and mountains
He longs for adventure
And as we put each thought on canvas
He forgets the faint smell of disinfectant
And feels the breeze of the peak
While he places a flag
Slowly conquering his condition
Competing interests
