Abstract

Since 1980, considerable research has been invested in the development of sphene-based glass-ceramics as hosts for possible future CANDU™ fuel recycle wastes. This paper reviews the fabrication of the glass-ceramics, their detailed microstructure, the partitioning of waste ions between the glassy and crystalline phases, and their resistance to leaching in deionized water and synthetic brines.
