1 Since the book is essentially a personal document, let me state my own position here: like Smith, I am not South African. I have worked intermittently in South Africa since 1981, usually enjoying either a research or teaching appointment at the University of the Witwatersrand. My previous appointments have been in the Department of Linguistics, and I am currently head of the Department of African Languages. I have, then, first-hand knowledge of the institution described in the book, and of the staff who were Smith's colleagues. I have some knowledge of South African educational systems; and my graduate students, like Smith's, are products of apartheid education and thinking.
