1 I posit that Erdrich's work engages in multiple dialogues: it is not solely inter-textual and intra-textual, but also e.g. inter-generic and inter-lingual. I write these terms with a hyphen to draw attention first to the prefixes “inter” and “intra” and their meaning of “betweenness,” second to the inherently dialogic quality taken for granted in these terms when they are spelled without a hyphen. These spellings and the meanings behind them are, I argue, applicable to Ellen Gilchrist's narrative methods as well.
