NMR applied to minerals: IV. Local order in the octahedral sheet of micas: Fe-F avoidance

Abstract

A series of phlogopite and biotite samples were examined by wide-line NMR spectroscopy. Monitoring of the fluorine signal revealed the presence of homogeneous fluorine domains. The importance of these domains increased with increase in F and Fe contents. A model for the distribution of anions and cations in the octahedral sheet of micas is presented and discussed.

Une série d'échantillons de phlogopite et de biotite est examinée au moyen de la spectroscopie de RMN large bande. Le signal du fluor indique l'existence de domaines homogènes en fluor. Un accroissement des teneurs en fluor et en fer conduit à une augmentation de l'importance de ces domaines. Un modèle de distribution des anions et cartions dans le feuillet octaédrique de micas est présenté et discuté.

Eine Serie von Phlogopit- und Biotitproben wurde mit Hilfe von NMR-Spektroskopie untersucht. Aus der Auswertung des Fluorsignals wurde auf das Vorhandensein homogener Fluordomänen geschlossen. Die Bedeutung dieser Domänen steigt mit zunehmenden Gehalten an F und Fe. Ein Modell für die Verteilung von Anionen und Kationen in der oktaedrischen Schicht von Glimmen wird vorgestellt und diskutiert.

Han sido examinadas por espectroscopía RMN de banda ancha, una serie de flogopitas y biotitas. El estudio de la señal del fluor reveló la presencia de dominios homogéneos de dicho elemento. La importancia de estos dominios aumenta con el contenido en fluor y hierro de la muestra. Se propone y discute un modelo para la distribución de aniones y cationes en la capa octaédrica de las micas.
