^{page 66 note 2} I cannot altogether suppress a mild protest that Erbse has numbered these papyri (I–XIV): conscientious papyrologists are overburdened with ciphers and serial numbers as it is, and in this case the device seems to me to foster the illusion of homogeneity among the various items, without any corresponding advantage. Still, the system of numeration is characterized by a high degree of built-in obsolescence.

^{page 66 note 3} Erbse's description of the hand of P.Oxy. 1086 (p. xxxvi) worries me, as it seems not to square with the excellent photograph which he provides: ‘Textus litteris uncialibus, paulum obliquis, satis magnis pulchrisque scriptus est.’ I cannot do better than quote Hunt's characterization: ‘A sloping semicursive hand … The letters are usually rather small, but there is much unevenness.’
