1 Long excerpts from Oenomaus Γοητῶν φωρά are quoted by Eusebius in Praep. ev. VI. I. take this opportunity of signalling the great interest of one passage, unremarked by Paquet as indeed by most historians of philosophy. At VI. 7.10–19 Oenomaus uses the Stoic concepts of συναίσθησὶς τε καὶ άντίληψις ἠμῶν αὐτῶν to argue that self-consciousness guarantees knowledge that we exist (cf. Descartes' cogito), and equally refutes Stoic determinism (ᾧ τρόπῳ ἡμῶν αὐτῶν ἀντειλήμμεθα, τούτῳ καὶ τῶν έν ήμῖν αὐθαιρέτων καὶ βιαίων).See Lloyd, A.C., Archivfür Geschicbte der Philosopbie 46 (1964), 198–200Google Scholar, for a brilliant reconstruction of the argument in issues debated between Stoics and Sceptics.
