1 In Social Planning for Canada, aside from some scattered references, some 10 pages out of 524 were devoted to the federal system. In Social Purpose for Canada there are 36 pages out of 472.

2 Confining the discussion to these essays is not meant to reflect on the quality of the other three essays in the section on Politics; namely, the discussion by the late Keith Callard on municipal government, Michael Oliver on democratic socialist politics, and Kenneth McNaught on foreign policy. With the limits of space it was thought preferable to treat merely one theme.
