A NEW SPECIES OF THE TICK GENUS IXODES (ACARI: IXODIDAE) PARASITIC ON MUSTELIDS (MAMMALIA: CARNIVORA) IN CANADA

Abstract

Ixodes (Pholeoixodes) gregsoni sp.nov. is described from adult females, nymphs, and larvae collected from the boreal forests of eastern Canada on American mink, Mustela vison Schreber, a species of weasel, Mustela sp., and American marten, Martes americana (Turton) (Carnivora: Mustelidae). Its morphological attributes, hosts, and distribution are compared with those of apparently its most closely related species, Ixodes (Pholeoixodes) texanus Banks.

Résumé

Les auteurs décrivent Ixodes (Pholeoixodes) gregsoni sp.nov. à partir de femelles adultes, de nymphes et de larves récoltées dans la forêt boréale de l’est du Canada sur le vison d’Amerique, Mustela vison Schreber, une espèce de belette, Mustela sp., et le martre d’Amerique, Martes americana (Turton) (Carnivora : Mustelidae). Ils comparent ses caractéristiques morphologiques, ses hôtes et sa répartition avec ceux d’ Ixodes (Pholeoixodes) texanus Banks, l’espèce avec laquelle elle serait apparemment le plus étroitement apparentée.
