Part II - A PEDAGOGICAL MODEL AND ITS APPLICATION
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 04 February 2010
Summary
The following three chapters, Chapters 6–8, form the second part of this book. We begin in Chapter 6 by presenting a new pedagogical model of listening. This model is centered around what is already known about listening, as laid out in Part I of the book. However, we maintain that existing models of the teaching of listening are narrow in focus, and we believe that a wider perspective is required. Therefore, we introduce further dimensions.
To illustrate how the pedagogical model can be used, in Chapter 7, we evaluate a selection of listening textbooks. In this chapter, we show that many of the dimensions of our model are missing from existing listening material. We do not, though, claim that every dimension of the model is required in all listening material. What we do maintain is that, through the selective introduction of aspects of the model to learners, they will be encouraged to develop more complete listening abilities.
To test the pedagogical model further, in Chapter 8, we present a series of case studies, taking the reader into contexts where the teacher is explicitly attempting to help students develop their listening skills. We see, through the case studies, that although some of the dimensions of the model may be present in some instances, there are still opportunities for further development of listening skills, based on the dimensions in our pedagogical model.
