Summary
This delightful miniature (a German composer would have called it Konzertstück; it lasts hardly 20 minutes) is of such a consistently high level of invention and inspiration that it has, despite its modest scale, taken its rightful place as one of the top four or five cello concertos. It was written in 1872 for the Belgian cellist and luthier August Tolbecque, who premiered it at the Paris Conservatoire in January 1873. It was a favourite of Casals who played it at his London debut in 1905.

A Autograph score (1872), Stichvorlage for E, in the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris (Ms. 485), viewable online at IMSLP. This manuscript is both beautiful to behold and wondrous in its attention to detail; simply, everything is there
E,P First edition score and parts, published by Durand in 1874
P exists in two printings, whose errors are different from one another. For this report the later printing (used by Kalmus for its reprint) was consulted; a few details known of the earlier are listed as they occur. The most striking error in the parts is the complete omission of the horn passage after C; of especial interest in the score is a bar of clarinet after G.
