Summary
In the middle of the Second World War Martinů fled from Paris, where he had been studying with Roussel, to the United States. Here, like Dvořák half a century earlier, he suffered greatly from homesickness for his native Czechoslovakia, and much of his music took on a tinge of nostalgia. Such a quality is of course especially suited to the viola, and this Rhapsody-Concerto, written in New York in 1952, is one of his most lyrical and romantic works, a valuable and rewarding addition to the viola concerto repertory. It is dedicated to Jascha Weissi, principal viola of the Cleveland Orchestra, who premiered it in 1953 under George Szell, and features prominently the rhythms of Martinů's native Moravian folk music.
sources
A Autograph full score (used as Vorlage for both E and P); whereabouts unknown
AV Autograph reduction for viola and piano (Vorlage for V)
E,P First edition score and parts, published by Bärenreiter in 1962; the 1980 reprint of E was used for this report
V Viola and piano score, published by Bärenreiter
Both E and P are beset with errors, and were evidently both taken independently from A. However, V is beautifully printed, and appears more reliable than either.
A curious feature is that in the score Clars are in C, but in the parts are notated in B flat; Trs, however, are in C in both score and parts.
