Summary
January:
Monday 1st Hans and Terence to supper. Pop not well at all – in bed with flu.
Tuesday 2nd Flew in snowstorm to Amsterdam. Peter [Diamand] waiting with red tulips. Rehearsal 4pm, 8–10. Bed early.
Wednesday 3rd Massage 9. Reh. 10.30–1. 2.30 -4. Dinner Mr Bruck.
Thursday 4th Massage 8.45. Reh. 10–2, 3–6. Very tired. Dinner with Roderick Jones.
Friday 5th Overslept. Reh 10–1. Slept all afternoon, mended and wrote letters. Rang Paddy. All well.
Saturday 6th Mr Bruck dinner.
Sunday 7th Dinner Cronheims 7pm.
Tuesday 9th Orfeo. Amsterdam. [Greet Koeman (Euridice), Nel Duval (Amor), Netherlands Opera Chorus and Orchestra, conductor Charles Bruck].
Thursday 11th Orfeo.
Sunday 14th Opera matinée. Coffee Mr Bruck.
Monday 15th 4.45 Flot.
Tuesday 16th Orfeo. [Pages for 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th January are missing but letters to Win and to Stella mention 17th as the day she travelled by train at 12.30 to Paris while the forward planner mentions P.B. Lesson, Paris on the five consecutive days 18th to 22nd January. P.B. was the singer Pierre Bernac].
Sunday 21st Lunch Charles Bruck. Orfeo 9pm.
Monday 22nd RASOLINE Molinard of Grasse [shaving cream] for John. Party Madame Gélis-Didot 6–8.
Tuesday 23rd Paris. Recital. Popular. Gerald. Where’er, Turtle, Hark, Mad Bess. Gretchen, Lachen und Weinen, Wandrers N., Erl King. Pur dicesti, Lasciatemi, Che faro. Bable, Loughareema, Ca’ the yowes, Spanish lady, Ash grove.
Wednesday 24th Train 7.30! Arrive Zurich 2.56. Leave 4.2, St Gallen 5.13. Reh 8pm Tonhallesalle. Hotel Hecht St Gallen.
Thursday 25th St Gallen Switz. 1,000 Swiss francs. Kindertotenlieder. Reh 11am.
Friday 26th 9.53am. arr 11.35. Rehearse aft. Walter Lang 5pm. Bluidy awful. Dolder Grand.
Saturday 27th Zurich radio. Aft 5–6. Where’er, Turtle, Gretchen, Lachen, Musensohn, Silent Noon, Bethlehem, Sigh no more. Rosalind [Maitland was staying in Rome], Via Principessa Clotilde 2, Rome. Capn. N[igel] Henderson.
Sunday 28th Zurich recital. Tonhalle 8.15. Kleine Saal. As Paris [see January 23rd]. Oh! so depressed. Kennedy Cook. British Council.
Monday 29th Leave for Rome. 14.08.
Tuesday 30th My pappy died peacefully after flu and slight stroke. Rang up home and decided to carry on with tour. Had all my Swiss francs stolen L40. Rather bleak day. Hotel Savoia.
