Summary
Medicine has had a long-standing tradition requiring that clinicians keep the private concerns of patients in confidence. However, the traditional duties to safeguard health information and respect for privacy rights face new, interesting, and difficult challenges. The scope of health information technology and its ability to store and analyze vast amounts of information have, as is often the case in bioethics, outstripped efforts to keep up both ethically and legally.
