Summary

Why is gender important for understanding the world in which we live? In this chapter I show how understanding gender offers an important way of understanding the world. I do not begin by assuming what gender is in order to establish its importance. Rather we can explore gendering as a dynamic and social process, which requires the development of new tools of analysis. Making sense of how gender works allows us to show how gender matters even where it does not appear to matter; gender is a technique for building worlds as well as bodies.
