Summary

The fifth chapter situates the arguments of the book in the context of American foreign policy. Because religious freedom is not only a universally-recognized fundamental human right but also a crucial marker of secure and flourishing societies, protecting it at home and advancing it abroad must be a key ingredient in American national security, conflict prevention, and counterterrorism strategies. It argues that the United States needs to move beyond mere rhetorical salutes to religious freedom and condemnation for its violation to embracing it as a central component of its foreign policy, taking the lead in promoting religious freedom abroad and working to rebuild the consensus in favor of religious freedom with its allies.
