Domino sancto ac beatissimo patri Eadfrido episcopo, sed et omni congregationi fratrum qui in Lindisfarnensi insula Christo deseruiunt, Beda fidelis uester conseruus salutem. Quia iussistis dilectissimi ut libro quem de uita beatae memoriae patris nostri Cuthberti uestro rogatu composui, praefationem aliquam in fronte iuxta morem praefigerem, per quam legentibus uniuersis et uestrae uoluntatis desiderium, et oboeditionis nostrae pariter assensio fraterna claresceret, placuit in capite praefationis et uobis qui nostis ad memoriam reuocare, et eis qui ignorant haec forte legentibus notum facere, quia nec sine certissima exquisitione rerum gestarum aliquid de tanto uiro scribere, nec tandem ea | quae scripseram sine subtili examinatione testium indubiorum passim transcribenda quibusdam dare praesumpsi, quin potius primo diligenter exordium, progressum, et terminum gloriosissimae conuersationis ac uitae illius ab his qui nouerant inuestigans.
