Summary
A.1 Celtic Personal Names (Welsh, Irish and Breton)
A.1.1 Alan [DLV, II, A.1.8]
[Emma mat(er)] Alain de Perci 3v38(1) s. xii2/4
Alanus 3r4(21), 3v42(22) s. xii2/4; ∼ 3v2(3) s. xii1; ∼ 12r1(4)
s. xiiex; ∼ de UUesd() 1v3(10) s. xiiex
Alein 4r2(11) s. xiiex ‒ s. xiiiin; [Fulco f(rate)r] ∼ 3r3(2) s. xii1
Aleinus de Crehun [son of Wido and Isenbele] 3r2(1) s. xii1
OBret Alan, OFr Alain, Alein (Michaëlsson 1936, pp. 23–4; Reaney 1997, s.n. Allain).
A.1.2 Alaine (fem.)
Alaina 10r9(6) s. xii1
Aleina 1v8(5) s. xiiex
OFr Alaine f., a feminine form of Alain (Michaëlsson 1936, p. 24); see above A.1.1. A possible alternative might be Latin (Greek) Helena; see A.5.34; OFr Elaine f. (variant Alaine, with pretonic a < e) (see Störing 1974, pp. 120–1).
A.1.3 Arthur [DLV, II, A.1.13]
Arturus [pater Ingelranni et Godgiua mater eius] 2r34(1)
s. xiimed
OBret Arthur (Loth 1890, p. 107). In his notes to the ThLV onomasticon, Feilitzen suggested as an alternative etymon AScand Ar(n)þur, a variant of Ar(n)þor < ON Arnþórr, ODan Arnthor (cf. Björkman 1910, pp. 8–9; Fellows Jensen 1968, p. 17; see also Feilitzen 1976, p. 156, s.n. Ertur). He notes that interchange of –þur and –þor in the second element appears on York coins under Æthelred II, namely: Arnður Hildebrand 1881, p. 56 (nos 617–20), Arður ibid., nos 626–7, Arnðor ibid., 612–15, Arðor ibid., nos 621–5 (see also Smart 1981, p. 14; Smart 1992, p. 39). The ThLV Arturus is stated to have been the father of a certain Ingelrannus, who seems to have been the product of an irregular union with a woman with the English name Godgiua. Ingelrannus is quite clearly a ContGerm (West Frankish) personal name (see A.2.119), and Insley believes that Arturus here is the Breton name and an early onomastic witness to the Arthurian cycle in England.
A.1.4 Brían [DLV, II, A.1.16]
Brien 10v55(1) s. xii1/4; ∼ pictor 3v44(1) s. xiimed
OBret Brient (Loth 1890, pp. 111, 193; Jackson 1967, p. 713 (sec. 1007)), of which Brien is an Anglo-Norman variant spelling. Cf. Brient 1086 (ICC, p. 35) occurring as Brien (DB, fol. 194 [Cambs.]). See also Michaëlsson 1936, pp. 144–5.
