Summary

This chapter provides an overview of the educational systems in Egypt, including a situational analysis of inclusive education, with reference to the marginalisation of children at risk, including children with disabilities, provisions and accommodations. The chapter refers to the contradictory results with reference to attitudes towards inclusive education. Legislation and policies in Egypt are presented in detail followed by an evaluation of disability initiatives whether done in cooperation with the Ministry of Education or through parents' activism. Finally, the chapter concludes by presenting the barriers and challenges. Major barriers are staff training and school conditions. The chapter then cites the five major challenges facing Egypt: 1. Converting all special education schools into support and resource centres. 2. Adoption of ONE educational system in Egypt. 3. Responsibility and accountability of the Ministry of Education for the education of all children with all ranges and categories of disabilities, and provision of quality education in inclusive settings. 4. Converting all existing schools to become barrier-free and accessible, and implementation of the Egyptian Code of Construction in new educational institutions. 5. Implementation of the CRPD provisions in all its articles (with a special focus on inclusive education to all Egyptian children).
