Summary
This chapter summarizes the conclusions of this study: the historical summaries were a vital and generative practice in ancient Israel, designed to create and consolidate a shared memory. In this conclusion, I highlight two central theoretical paradigms that were central to the study: the shift from genre to form as defined by the new formalism, and the category of “functional memory.” The shift from genre to form facilitates attention to the repeating paradigms and patterns that emerge in the historical summaries and attends to their “affordances” for constructing a shared memory. The category of “functional memory” likewise draws attention to the usefulness of different media of memory. In both cases, the form of the historical summary as a schematic narrative, presented as performed speech, which replicates a limited set of culturally charged symbols, proves to be a useful form of commemoration in the Second Temple period.
