My Career in Psychoneuroimmunology
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 April 2022
This chapter describes how my career evolved from a notably inauspicious and unpromising beginning. I made a poor choice for my graduate mentor, among my many missteps, and I describe how I now mentor – using the lessons about productivity that have made a difference for me. I discuss the exceptional value of cross-disciplinary collaboration and how it makes research much more interesting and fun. I highlight important lessons I received that are particularly relevant to women: the perfect is the enemy of the good, and act as if you have a Y chromosome (selectively!). Readers are urged to consider how they can evolve, broadening their research focus over time so that their research remains topical and has broad appeal.
