The archbishop's mandate

Reverendo in Christo patri et domino Domino Roberto, Dei gratia Herefordensi episcopo, Richardus, permissione divina Londoniensis episcopus, salutem et sinceram in Domino caritatem. Literas reverendissimi in Christo patris ac domini Domini Thomae, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati ultimo die mensis Octobris proximo praeterito [31 October 1407] recepimus in haec verba:

Thomas, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas et apostolicae sedis legatus, venerabili fratri nostro Domino Richardo, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo, salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Ex iniuncto pastoralis officii debito, circa quod nostra suprema versari debet intentio, unicam electam et columbam Dei, sanctam matrem nostram, ecclesiam Catholicam sub uno baptismo et una fide, in una sana doctrina a sanctis patribus tradita, iuxta discretionem a Deo creditam et potestatem ab eo qui claves gerit nobis commissam cum omni diligentia perservare tenemur, sicque sentire poterimus et ceteri poterint universi quam bonum sit et iocundum habitare fratres in unum. Sed (prothdolor!) inimicus homo et antiquus sophista, volens tunicam Domini inconsutilem subtiliter violare scissuris, in angelum lucis se transformans, vitia multotiens mentitur esse virtutes, reperiensque personas per quas simplicium animas fallere potest sub quodam praetenso velamine sanctitatis ac praetensa aequitatis fraterna statera sed ficta per ipsas personas ad hoc per ipsum fallaciter praelectas vitia ipsa prodit in populo, nova zizania, haereses et errores seminat, ac sanctam et sanam doctrinam ecclesiae in nostra Cantuariensi provincia ac universali ecclesia [hjactenus approbatum in dubium revocat, in modo puniendi atque docendi discordias suscitat, atque sub imagine pietatis et ovina pelle angelicaeque conversationis effigiae gregem Dominicum turbulenta et amara aqua marachi nititur adaquare, malum sub specie boni propinans in calice maledicto Babylonis. Ex praemissis igitur et aliis causis veris et legitimis nostril animi motum ad hoc ducentibus ad instantem petitionem domini nostri regis et aliorum procerum regni pro certis negotiis statum, defensionem et utilitatem ecclesiae et regni Anglicani concernentibus, cum praelatis et clero nostrae Cantuariensis provinciae opportunum ducimus communem habere tractatum quern in universitate Oxoniensi, ubi virorum literatorum viger debet sapientia, disponimus ordinandum.
