Rex venerabili in Christo patri A[lexandro], eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Clara memoria recordantes qualiter vicesimo quarto die Septembris ultimo praeterito [24 September 1382] exponentes vobis per breve nostrum regium mala quamplurima et intolerabilia nobis et ligeis nostris per hostium nostrorum invasionem saepius illata, qui nos, regnum nostrum Angliae, ac Ecclesiam Anglicanam omnino destruere absque intermissione solicite machinantur; unde nos in salvationem status ecclesiae praedictae ac regni et populi nostrorum defensionem necessariam, ac propter resistentiam hostium nostrorum praedictorum, census et expensas inaestimabiles effundere oporteret, quas quidem expensas perficere absque fidelium nostrorum iuvamine non valemus; vobis rogando mandavimus quod convocatis praelatis et clero vestrae provinciae et negotiis praedictis eis expositis et declaratis, ipsos ad subsidium competens in hoc casu, nobis in supportationem expensarum praedictarum concedendum induceretis, et ad hoc efficaciter apponeretis partes vestras; vobis iam significamus, quod venerabilis pater Willelmus, archiepiscopus Cantuariensis cui pro huiusmodi convocatione in provincia sua facienda per breve nostrum similiter mandavimus, aliique praelati ac clerus dictae provinciae suae unam decimam de eorum beneficiis ecclesiasticis eiusdem Cantuariensis provinciae nobis certis terminis solvendam, ad captandam nostram regiam benevolentiam gratuite concesserunt; vobis de quo surame confidimus in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini, iterum rogando mandantes, quatenus gravibus periculis, quae ecclesiae et regno praedictis patulo intuitu imminere conspicitis, attentis debiteque propensis, ac facta sine dilatione convocatione praelatorum et cleri vestrae provinciae in ecclesia cathedrali Beati Petri Eboracensis, ut est moris, eisque tarn dictis negotiis et periculis quam concessione nobis per clerum dictae Cantuariensis provinciae, de una decima, ut praemittitur, facta, declaratis; ipsos ad huiusmodi decimam, seu aliud subsidium competens et aequivalens, in supportationem expensarum praedictarum, et defensionem ecclesiae et regni praedictorum, nobis concedendum, et ad festum Paschae [22 March 1383] seu aliam diem brevem et propinquum, cum omni solicitudine qua poteritis, et eo specialius quo maxima habetur necessitas, inducatis et procuretis, et circa hoc corditer et fideliter laboretis; pro quo vobis, ceterisque praelatis ac clero dictae provinciae vestrae, magis teneri volumus in futurum. Nos de quantitate dicti subsidii, cum concessum fiierit, ac de termino seu terminis solutionis eiusdem, certificantes indilate. Et hoc sicut nos et honorem nostrum ac salvationem et defensionem ecclesiae et regni praedictorum diligitis nullatenus omittatis. Teste rege apud Westmonasterium vicesimo octavo die Ianuarii [28 January 1383].
