Summary
Note: This is not intended to be a complete bibliography on the authors cited. I have simply listed the editions and studies used in the text, together with translations where available and where known to me. The following general reference works on Greek science and technology (listed in the main bibliography) should also be consulted: Africa 1968; Burford 1972; Drachmann 1963; Fraser 1972; Fuhrmann 1960; Grille 1980; Heath 1921; Lloyd 1970, 1973; Neugebauer 1969; Oleson 1984.
Apollonius of Citium
Texts studied
Commentary on the De Articulis of Hippocrates, Bk. I (pref. and epilogue), Bk. II (pref. and epil.), Bk. III (pref. and epil.).
Edition
J. Kollesch and F. Kudlien, Apollonios von Kitium, Kommentar zu Hippokrates Über das Einrenken der Gelenke (CMG XI 1, 1). Berlin, Akademie-Verlag, 1965. (Greek text with German translation.)
I use this as the most accessible text, while sharing the reservations expressed in his review by Alpers (Gnomon 39, 1967, pp. 26–33) about its value over against the earlier edition of Hermann Schöne (Apollonius von Kitium illustrierter Kommentar zu der Hippokratischen Schrift περι ἄρθρων, Leipzig 1896).
Date
Mid-first century BC (Schöne, 1896, p. xxiv). Schöne's historical introduction is still indispensable; but see also Deichgräber, 1930, pp. 206ff., 262–3, 321–2, 334; Fraser, 1972, I pp. 362–3, II pp. 536–7.
Textual note
The MS text in I 1, followed by Kollesch and Kudlien, should be emended: Cocchi's conjecture θεωρῶν for θεωρῶ) is undoubtedly correct.
