Summary
As we have seen throughout this book, emotion discourses were used by ancient Jewish authors as strategies for establishing the terms of power relationships. The various discourses found in 4 Maccabees, Joseph and Aseneth, 3 Maccabees, 1 Maccabees, and 4 Ezra have political repercussions and are deployed for political purposes. In order to extend this analysis, I move on from a discussion of emotion discourse and power-over to one focused on the role of emotion discourse in constructing and sustaining communities. The political need for power in community building encompasses authority structures, group hierarchies, and relations between insiders and outsiders, and emotion discourse plays an essential role in addressing all of these dimensions.
