Summary

Powrót

Pora już wracać. Ciasno mi tutaj,

miasta są obce i ludzie obcy.

Dali mi bluzę i mocne buty

i furażerkę jak młodym chłopcom.

Pora już wracać. Będę w wagonie

śpiewać z innymi wesołe pieśni.

To nic, że włosy siwe u skroni,

że płucom ciężko, może za wcześnie.

Pora już wracać. Płynie wzruszenie

sercem schorzałym i łza jest w oku.

Słupy przydrożne kładą swe cienie

na las i pola i w noc głęboką.

Pora już wracać. Jutro nad ranem

miasto mi znane i znana rzeka.

Wyjdę z wagonu, na dworcu stanę,

na dworcu, gdzie nikt nie czeka.

Homecoming

It's time to return. I'm cramped in here,

the places are alien and the people are alien.

They've given me a tunic and heavy boots

and a cap like young lads wear.

It's time to return. In the wagon

I'll join in singing cheerful songs.

Never mind that my temples are grey,

that it's hard to breathe, prematurely perhaps.

It's time to return. Emotions flood

my sickly heart and tears are in my eyes.

Wayside posts cast their shadows

across woods and fields even in deepest night.

It's time to return. Tomorrow in the morning

a familiar town, a familiar river.

I'll leave the wagon, alight on the platform,

at the station, where no-one awaits.
