Summary
The hotel room. The phone rings. AYANDA answers it.
AYANDA: Hello … Oh, it's you, Karl … Yes … Okay … Okay … Okay … Karl says ‘hi’.
ANNA: Hi, Karl!
ROBERT: Tell him I say hello.
AYANDA [still on the phone]: Daddy says hello. Okay … Okay. I'll take it in the bedroom.
She takes the phone with her and exits.
A long silence.
ANNA: How dare you? How dare you demand in front of Peter that I apologise to him? He called me a nice white wife, a very rich white wife. I am the reason your Organisation ignored you … and you just sat there, Robert, and you said nothing. You didn't defend me, you didn't stand up for me, for us, for our family. Why, Robert? At least Peter knows he has been exposed. Even the president now knows what kind of man he is … [pause]
ROBERT: Where do we go from here?
ANNA: Home, I suppose. We fly out tomorrow night. You did tell President Mbeki that you needed to go home and discuss it with your family, didn't you?
ROBERT: But my family is here with me now. You and Ayanda.
ANNA: We need time to take in what has just happened. You need time. A lot of things have to be taken into consideration. Ayanda's wedding, your job at the university, my company, our lives.
ROBERT: I have been thinking about this day for over 30 years, Anna.
ANNA: I know. It has been my biggest fear. I had somehow in my hidden thoughts hoped that this day would never come. I am scared, Robert.
ROBERT: I am scared too, Anna, but we are going to have to deal with this. Sooner or later.
ANNA: Robert, let's not rush this. You said yourself that the president talked about two offers – the cabinet or the ambassador position in a year's time.
ROBERT: I don't know what to think. Only one thing is important to me now.
