Summary
Americans have big illusions about the world that keep our nation from countering threats effectively. These illusions are embodied in the nation's public culture. It's national in scope, and extraordinarily resistant to change, despite a changing world. Illusions generated by public culture are very broad in their appeal – reaching across the ideological spectrum and appealing to both conservatives and liberals.
